I want to lose 15 lbs, but have a herniated disc. Safe exercises?

I'm walking & doing stationary bike to strengthen my lower back, but I want to lose 15 pounds, too. Are there safe exercises you know of, or should I just buy some nutritional supplements to speed up my metabolism?

As far as exercises, your best bet is to contact your physician or a local physical therapist. Your physician will be happy to provide free advice and informative materials to help you in your efforts to strengthen your back. An even better source is a physical therapist, who deals with these issues everyday. Most therapists will be happy to give you free materials on exercises you can do and some will even speak with you for a little while for free. Call around. I guarantee you will find one that will help you at no cost. Just make sure that you don't try to do anything intensive too soon. That's just asking for an injury, which will lead to a long time of healing and a possible temporary or permanent disability due to pain and/or injury. The turtle's pace is best in this situation.

As far as supplementation, I would not take any supplements to speed up your metabolism, but you can take some that are completely safe and will not only help you lose weight, but also increase the speed at which your muscles repair, which will help your back tremendously. The best ones you could take are whey protein and creatine. While these supplements are best known in bodybuilding circles, they are actually extremely effective for everyone and very inexpensive. Hundreds of studies have been done on the effects of whey protein and they have shown that incorporating whey protein into your daily diet will help you lose weight, increase muscle strength, speed repair of damaged muscles (whether from injury or exercise), and decrease body insulin spikes, resulting in more energy throughout the day.

Creatine is also a very good supplement for you because of its role in helping with muscle repair, growth, and hydration. Creatine also helps pull nutrients into muscle cells, where they are needed.

These supplements will not only help you repair your back muscles, but they will also help you to lose weight and gain lean muscle mass, which will help you keep the weight off and will help support your entire body, helping to prevent future injuries. Best of luck to you. Source(s): For more information, try: www.muscleandfitness.com, www.cdc.gov, www.webmd.com, and/or the American Physical Therapy Association at www.apta.org
I also had a laminectomy. Swimming is the best. No pressure on the back. And use many, many muscles.
2 yrs ago my doctor gave me a diet plan called Rocky Mountain green diet, In 1.5 months I dropped 23 lbs and never felt hungry, actually I felt guilty eating as much as I did. It was just a group of foods I could pick from anytime during the day and eat, nothing special just a low carb diet. The rule is if it has flour it's fatning, no bread no potatoes no noodles. Good things, eggs, cheese, meat. I can dig one of these sheets up and mail it for a very low cost.
diet and exercise is very important. you should use an exercise bike which will give you a good cardio workout. As far as diet goes, eat 5 low carb meals/ day.
