Shyness at the gym? help...? |
I have been going to the gym for a little while, but i limit myslef to a stationary bike in the corner because i am incredibly shy. I dont want other people to see me exerscizing [sp?] esp not boys. im afraid ill do it wrong and theyll laugh at me. am i weird? how do i get over this? Its just a matter of confidence. Another word for confidence is certainty. Once you know for sure you are doing everything right, you will suddenly have nothing to worry about. Perhaps you could ask one of the other ladies at the gym how to properly do it (stretches, speeds, increments...etc..), or a boy, and maybe make some friends in the process? also you could look at some guides online and make sure your posture is right, etc.. Another way to feel more confident is to hire a personal trainer for 1 session. He will show you how to properly do everything and you will feel much more sure about everything. I'd also like to add, that when I first began weight training I only weighed 115 pounds!! Everybody in there was atleast double my weight and experience. It took about 5 months for them to realize, "hey, this guy is serious about this. That's kind of cool" 4 years later I'm one ofi the bigger guys helping out the smaller guys :) Hope this helps! Source(s): Weight lifter / excersizer for 4 years. You arent weird. I would probably feel the same way. Just think about your goal, and how you want to look/feel. No one's perfect, everyone at the gym is there for a reason. Besides, they're probably more worried about themselves than watching other people. I go the YMCA, its a lot of older people so I don't care what I look like. I used to go to the gym at my college and felt the same way you do. Maybe try going at a time when there are less people or get a trainer for a few sessions to show you how to do everything correctly. P.S. stationary bikes are largely a waste of time because they burn far fewer calories than other machines (if thats what your going for). Most of you is rested on the seat so you're only gettting 1/2 a workout. The elliptical burns about 300 calories in 30 min, a stationary only about 150. You should talk to one of the personal trainers or staff at your gym, and ask for assistance using the machines and weights. It's their jobs, and most gyms offer this service. They'll show you proper form, and teach you what weights you should be using for your fitness level. You'll find that most people at the gym don't know what they're doing. I went through this process, and was taught proper form. I also read some magazines like Women's Health and Fitness, which talks about how to do different things. I normally don't spend too much time watching everyone else, but when I do see someone else, I usually see that they're doing something wrong - bad form, swinging their arms, only doing half of the move. Most people at the gym are there to work out. They're not watching you, and they're not judging you. Unless you're spilling out of your sports bra or your thong is showing, most people aren't going to do more than glance your way. experience and life Few of us look our best while exercising. Chances are if there is someone you know there, they are feeling self concious too. All we can really do is choose exercise clothes that fit properly and make sure nothing is hanging out. Since we know that few of us are comfortable in this situation, you can use it to your advantage. Go up to a guy you like and start a conversation. Break the ice with a funny remark about exercise clothes or ask a question about the gym or exercising. He's self concious, too, and may welcome the chance to loosen up and talk to someone. Have Fun! |
