Will a stationary bike help me lose weight?

i am trying to lose 40 lbs . i am a woman and had two babies in one year, and no they are not twins! its been over a year and im ready to lose. Can the stationary bike help? if so, what do i need to do as far as how often and long do i need to excersise....

Your body burns a certain amount of calories each day whether you exercise or not. We each have what is called a Basal Metabolic Rate (BMR). This rate gradually decreases with age. To the BMR you add the total calories used during the day due to all exercise and activity, which gives you your Active Metabolic Rate. The longer you ride a stationary bike the more calories you will burn.

I am 6', 170 lbs and 52 years old. My basal metabolic rate is about 1700 calories burned per day. To that number I can add whatever calories I burn during the day due to activity and exercise. That will tell me approximately how many total calories I will burn up in a day.

Once you know this number you can eat however many calories you choose in order to lose, gain or maintain your weight. You burn about 3500 more calories than you consume to lose a pound.

I have a page posted at my website that explains this further. You can also input your own info to see your own numbers as far as calories used in a day.

Good health and good luck!

As long as you " Burn More Than You Consume" you will loose weight. It won't matter how you loose it, it is just the fact some activities are more intense ( causing you to burn more) than others.
The stationary is good for burning some calories, but you may get the same effect by walking..However, take a day pack with 10 lbs of weights in it and then go for thatr same walk and it changes everything....
I personally am more in favor of walking outside rather than pedalling inside...as you can tell. They say you burn 100 calories per mile but I say you burn about 300 calories per mile with this day pack on.

Yes it will but it needs to have resistance on it . Eat 1300 calories a day, no less, and exercise and you will feel great. Also I was thinking with you haveing babies so close you may need this information..

Sounds like you could need some energy...Iron deficency test: Go to the mirror and pull your lower eyelid and see if the color is red or flesh color. If its flesh colored you are lacking enough iron and should take a herbal iron like Floradix. It will take a month to see a difference. Iron carrys oxygen in your blood and if you dont have it you will feel tired, cold hands and feet, headaches, RLS, dull brittle hair, brittle nails, poor sleep, pale skin (see thru), shortness of breath, fatigue, poor concentration, low mood, ringing in the ears, cracks in the corner of the mouth, dizziness, fainting, sore tongue and canker sores oh and pale mucous membranes in lower eyelid.

A good energy smoothie that I use for muscle building and so I never feel sore after working out.
I use only frozen fruit because of where I live.
16-18 oz glass
5 cubes of pineapple
3 slices of peaches
5 strawberries
fill the rest with blueberries
microwave for 40 seconds then add 4 tsp of ground chia seeds, 2 tbs of black strap molasses,
tbs of wheat germ, 1tsp of spirullina, 25 grms of ISOPURE orange protien powder and then i just cover the berries with hemp milk or almond. 1 gram of Acia berry powder.

Then I blend with hand mixer til mixed.

I also watch You Are What You Eat on the BBC USA chanel in the morning or afternoon. Absolute MOTIVATION!

yes, it can help you loose.
Try 30 minutes, at least 3 times a week.
gradually work it up to 30 minutes, 4 times a week.
then 30 minutes, 5 times a week.
then try 40 minutes, 3 times a week, and keep increasing.
good luck, and congragulations on your children : ]

yes, a stationary bike is a great workout! make sure you do "hills" where it is harder to pedal. that is a great fat burner. also, if you can find a gym with spin classes...they are AMAZING. and they are fun, so it goes by quickly!
