Can I use the eliptical or bike to add more cardio time on top of my running workout and still avoid injuries? |
If I run say....20 miles per week and keep a very slow/steady increase in mileage...can I do more work on the eliptical machine or stationary bike for added cardio time? Yes, in fact if you are or get injured and don't want to lose a lot of stamina you have from running I would say to definitely do those other things for cardio (stairclimber great as well). I use a heart rate monitor and running kicks your heart rate up higher than anything else, but the others probably get it about 60-70% of the running. So on off days or easy days these cardio things will help you and carry over to your running. Lifting weights will also keep your body stronger and less likely to break down from running. Good Luck For sure you can do that. Just listen to your body and do not over do it. Start with 20-30 minutes each time. Most training plans (don't know if you are using a specific training plan for any race). Cross training is a great way to stay in shape and is good for the respitory system while not having the same pounding impact of running. |
