Make a stationary bike out of a real bike? |
how does one go about doing this? I've seen those little devices that allow you to ride in place but i don't have the money to pay for one so i'd like to whip something up at home that would work in the same manner. You can get one for under $100 at Performance. Its extremely unlikely you could DIY for less than that. It takes a pretty solid frame to work right, and a resistance unit is going to be difficult to come up with. I'm pretty good mechanically, with an amazing collection of spare parts and assorted crap stashed in my basement, but I doubt I could do it. Make something to lift the back wheel off the ground, and remove the front one. All you need to do is build a sturdy frame that will secure the bike in place and raise your rear wheel off the ground by maybe an inch. Make sure you have a brace in front as well to keep you from turning the front wheel to keep your balance. You will need some way to impart a "load" to your rear wheel in the above two scenarios or you will have wasted your time. Using your bikes brakes will not work well due to the excess heat caused by friction. The ones you by have a pressure wheel setup. Unless you own a welder, I doubt you can make anything that can withstand the stress. You could pay a welder to make something, but now you are in more money than just buying a trainer. Choose an inexpensive one like a CycleOps Mag. I have seen them new for under $100. Craigslist has even higher line trainers for that same money - used. There's a bit more to it than just raising the back wheel off the ground. If you only do that, there will be no resistance and you will literally be "spinning your wheels". Silverbullet and McG both have the correct answer. In the time it would take you to build an inferior one you could work at McDonald's and earn more than enough money to buy a nice one. I bought mine off EBay for around $100.00 and it works super. |
