Bike lock with quick release wheels?

What size is a good size of a U lock for my bike? It has quick release wheels. so what is a good u lock size so i can take off my front wheels and lock it to a stationary object with my bike?

also what is the correct way to lock a bike with quick release wheels and seats.

First of all, get rid of the quick release seatpost binder and replace it with a conventional allen bolt. Buy a chain lock (Kryptonite, OnGuard, Abus, MasterLock), and if you are really nervous, a four foot long cable (just the cable). Lock your rear wheel and frame (using the chain) to whatever it is that you have to lock up to , and loop the cable around your front wheel and tie it back in to your chain or your padlock/disc lock. There are also companies that manufacture anti-theft quick release skewers and seatpost binders. You'll soon grow sick and tired of the remove-seat-remove-wheel-struggle-with-u... method of bike security. Keep in mind that all lock systems can be defeated. What sets a good lock apart from a bad one is how long it takes to circumvent it. The best way to prevent bike theft is to not leave your bike unattended (even when locked) for extended periods of time. That means you don't leave it locked up on the street for 8 hours while you're at work. Always bring your bike inside, if possible. Fortunately for me, I live in a really small town where people could care less about stealing bikes, but if you live in any kind of a metro area, I'd strongly advise not leaving your bike locked anywhere (well, maybe in front of a police station) for more than thirty minutes. Also, if you're going to be commuting around town, do it on a roughed up singlespeed beater and not a $5,000 XTR full-suspension dreamboat.

If you must lock a bike make sure it's one that can be replaced. Bike locks do not prevent theft--they slow down a thief.

Sorry for the negative feelings. I don't trust bike locks.

Never leave a bike you want to keep unattended. Easier said than done -- sure. Anything worth wile is worth the effort.

If the only, last resort possibility is locking your bike, get 10 feet of logging chain and 3 pad locks -- the bullet proof type. Wrap the chain around a steel pole through both wheels up through the seat frame and lock it together at the end links. Use the other 2 locks to lock links at the frame to lock in the wheels if they cut through one lock or link. Deterrence.

A single U-Lock isn't all that great. However, if all you have is a U-Lock, you've got to make the most of it.

First, get rid of the quick release on the saddle. There is no way to secure it. Buy a regular seat post clamp and bolt.

When locking your bike with the U-Lock:

1. Take the front wheel off the bike and put it beside the bike.
2. Pass the U-Lock through the front wheel, rear wheel and around the seat tube of the bike. This way all parts of the bike are secured by the U-Lock.
3. Fasten the lock to a stout pole, bike rack, etc.

To be even more secure, buy a cable lock, as well. With a cable lock you can leave the front wheel attached, running the cable through both wheels and around the pole or bike rack. Two locks will substantially slow the process of stealing your bike.

Hope this helps.

If you are going to go the Ulock route get one that is the largest that will fit in your bike frame using its mounting bracket. Many of the smaller Ulocks are just too tight to get around an object, the bike frame and both wheels. You will also have to address your quick release seat post problem.

The other thing to remember is many companies are becomg more used to bikes being brought in throhgh doors and on elevators.

Even a well locked bike is subject to theft of parts. An allen wrench set and a few minutes is all it takes to lose a lot of pieces and render the bike unrideable. A swift kick from an angry bike thief is all it takes to bend your bike frame and wheels. So the Ulock is going to be the best bet for security but a $100 used bike with non-QR wheels and a $10 cable lock might be the most secure system. Save your nice bike for rides where it can stay with you.
