If "sport bikes" are built for one person, why do they have 2 seats?

every day here I see people bashing sport bikes' pillion capabilities, why?

I think the people whom you are riding just don't know how to ride pillion..or you're doing it wrong...something....

I've ridden dozens of people pillion on my bike, and never had a complaint about discomfort...

Why do you think sport bikes have 2 seats?

captain: When i have a passenger on my bike, It's typically a youthful female (16-30) I assure you they are comfortable, as they are usually resting on my back, and i've even had a couple fall asleep on me...

Now, If i wanted to take grandma for a ride, of course dad's bike is a better choice, she's old...

heck, when I get old, I'll get a 'Wing like dad's (or whatever is comparable at the time) and enjoy my old fartin' days, but for now, I'll stick to speed and performance...'01 CBR1100XX

I don't know. But I got to thinking and I can't think of the last time a chick on the back of a sport bike didn't look like a gymnast. And I can't think of the last time the gal on the back of a bagger didn't look like someone's grandma or a truckstop waitress.

They have 2 seats because people want to be able to have the option to carry another person. That doesn't mean that a sport bike is ideal for riding 2 up. Regardless how comfortable you think a passenger is on the back of your bike, it will pale in comparison to the comfort of a cruiser or a touring bike. It's just a fact, deal with it. Sport bikes aren't made to go on long trips or carry passengers. The only reason why they have pillions is to appease the owners.

people here don't so much bash sport bikes because they are sport bikes, they bash them because of the attitudes of some of their riders... particularly some that post here on yahoo answers

but really.... they have a passenger pillion so your boyfriend can have something on his bottom for once instead of it always being about your bottom

you know,if we all just refuse to answer this punks "questions" he'll just dry up and go away, something like the boogers he must have in that honker of his.
he's just looking for attention, something his crack mamma never gave him

So you can carry a dog

Yeah getting off your bike prob to scared to say anything

To keep the tool-kit in?.My wife has been on all my larger sportsbikes,04 ZX10,03 ZX6-6 and present 07 ZX6-R and she felt fine, seat is around 4 inches at it's widest, but I guess the ladies like that sort of thing.

for the weekend warrior who thinks its cool to own a bike so goes and buys one to be cool and, and the seat so that his wife can go, cuz you know this guys is p*%sy whipped

They don't have two seats. It's just one.
The only reason you have room enough for comfort behind you is that you don't have anything in front.

At the risk of offending the female riders on this forum, the rear seat is for picking up chicks. Ever try to do it without one?....they keep slipping off the back when I gas on it.

the back seat & riding position are so your mom can advertise her merchandise when business is slow.

Who cares? Why try so hard to convince people that what you ride is better or cooler than a cruiser? Just shut up and ride man.

My wife's Civic has a trailor hitch, but I still prefer my truck when I need to tow anything.

I usually agree with most of your banter but I gotta go against the grain on this one Mags.

All of the ratings and specs you read about sportbikes are calculated on a one rider basis. The factory dampener settings, suspension, and chip mappings all are set for one rider.

It's sort of like the extra shoe lace holes in your sneakers. They are there but would be uncomfortable to actually use.

So to answer the question of why do thay make the seats, For the look and so people can feel like they have an option. They provide just enough comfort to carry a groupie from the local hooters or other biker hang out to the motel.

sure you can do it, you can even do it for maybe 200 miles in a day. maybe on a long weekend you can kick that to 250. But, in general, sport bikers don't do that.

Oregon to Texas, three times in the last 4 years, 3 days to get there. When I do get there, I'm fresh, relaxed, and ready to party with the boys and so is my passenger.

Anytime you and your passenger want to try and keep up with me on a 700 mile plus day your welcome to try.

I do have to admit though, following behind a guy with his woman on the back in those little skimpy shorts, butt up in the air like that seat forces her to do as she leans forward, well, now that is always a welcome sight, I guess these sport bike guys don't mind guys riding behind them checkin out the babes booty.

That little thing of a pad behind the rider is more of a cover where you store your tool kit than an actual seat. There is usually just a plastic cover there than a seat, but to make it more user-friendly, a "seat" was added there, not saying it's the best seat.
With a person who knows how to ride with passengers, it can work out well as a seat, but bikes such as supersport bikes were designed for performance and racing, not to carry passengers.

Take a look at a car like a Mustang. They have rear seats, but the leg and head room is almost nothing where unless your rear passengers are very short, it will be very uncomfortable for them. You can't deny there are rear seats in a Mustang, but the car is better used with just two people in front.

I'm starting to think you have serious issues as we see from this current rant.

I don't give a rats a$$ what anyone rides.. why the big deal everyday from you..

give it a rest

Yeah I have a back seat on my large cruiser and it's for my wife to go along, I take her because I want to, I enjoy our time on the bike, If we didn't have the same interest she wouldn't be a wife. since I have a cruiser I'm not limited to around town riding , I like having the radio/cd player, the big seats and a nice comfortable one for my lady.. to each their own

They have two seats because most Americans are "double-wide" in that part of the anatomy!
