Why is skateboarding banned in many areas?

I have been wanting to try my hand at skateboarding some time...but I have one question...why is skateboarding such a "hated" sport by many police officers and security guards? Why do people bike and roller blade all the time, but skateboarding has its own "not allowed" signs everywhere? I don't even know if I should try it here, in the ATL, where I haven't seen many boarders. Help? I'm curious...

I have been skating for about 8 years now. It sucks that a lot of security guards are @$$H0Les. I have learned to deal with it. I have gotten my name written down in the "book" soo many times. Secutiry guards say that it is vandalizing public property. I have had boards taken from me, and i have had security guards snap my boards in front of me. In my opinion you should skate. Skating takes alot of dedication if you wanna be good, but i have friends that just skate too. As long as your having fun then who care! Just try it, i bet you will fall in love with it, well at least i did. Hope i was some help.

I can speak for my area only which we used to have the "skateboard" problem.

Unlike bikers and roller bladers, skateborders, first of all, do not wear protective gears and they often get into traffic when they do their "tricks". We had a major problem when skateboarders skate on parking lots, park benches, school yards, etc, because they either hurt themselves and the property owner will be responsible, or somebody can hurt them by ending up infront of a moving vehicle.

Police officers do not hate skateboarders, rather those who skate irresponsibly putting themselves and others at risk. And it's also a safety violation and most skateboarders tresspass on private property to skate in empty pool or warehouse.

So in our area, the city created a skate park. There are 2 skate parks within 5 mile radius. This way, skaters can do their "tricks" in their own playground and they can socialize with their fellow skaters also.

Our ordinance do not forbid the use of skates outside the skate park, you can still ride on it to get to places. What the ordinance forbid is the use of "tricks" outside the skate park which is the primary cause of injuries (falling over or running into bystandards), property damage (peeled paint of hand rails, wax residue on benches, etc), and sometime accidents (skating in front of a moving vehicle).

So my advice to you is this, stay out of the streets and find a nearest skate park in you area.

i'm pretty sure it is because they don't want you hitting people by accident or damaging public property

bottom line they hate us!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

because back in the day when i was a teen skaters like myself would loiter around public areas and normally we were long haired or agressive looking and so on..rather then banning long hair or the way we dressed they banned skateboards since banning the other would be illegal and we didnt "fit in" which scares a lot of people that cant handle kids with teenage angst

because some people are ******* and are afraid of getting a little scratch on the side walk
