Motorcycle riding in Al Khobar? |
I am a motorcycle rider, soon moving to Saudi. Currently ride a sport-tourer Honda ST1300. While I was living in Aramco.. neighbors on two sides of me were harley addicts.. I couldnt stand it when their buddies came by late in the night to show off and you'll hear at midnight, the "brmmm" of the mufflers.. Buy a dual sport in saudi Do you have a death wish? Do you have any idea how absolutely horrific and rude the local drivers are here in the Eastern Province? Do you know what the "Saudi swing" is? It's where a driver is in the very right hand lane of a three or four lane road and decides at the very last possible second that he [not she - there are NO "she" drivers here!] is going to turn left and does so with no regard to any other car on the road or the fact that the two lanes to the very left of him are going straight through the intersection instead of turning. A breakdown lane in any other country is for just that - a driver who no longer has a working vehicle - here it is another lane and typically the passing lane - it is not unusual for local drivers here to make their own lanes if it suits them. Waiting their turn at a red light? No way. They will pass all traffic and place themselves in the middle of the intersection just to be the first one to go when the light turns green - so what that they are blocking traffic - they don't care. The local drivers - NOT the imported drivers [they get arrested and thrown in jail for even thinking about running a red light!] - here have no regard whatsoever for any other driver on the road, have no regard to traffic rules or traffic lights, and are never ever stopped by the police for their blatant violations and complete and utter disregard to road safety. I have never seen such unruly and reckless driving in my entire life in any other country I have been too than the drivers here. Do some fact checking. See what the statistics say about the number of accidents and road fatalities. Do what you want, but if I were in your shoes I'd sell the bike and buy the biggest SUV I could afford. Don't worry about whether you can afford the gas for it here - it's cheaper than water. I have no idea. All I can say is that theres [relativlely] lots of Harley bikers in Saudi. Banshee is my favorite i used to own a suzuki GSX-R 1000. it was a total joy to ride. i used to ride in jeddah when i lived their for a while. when i moved back to riyadh, i shipped the bike with me and did a little riding here. do not listen to anyone that says it is more dangerous here to ride than it is at the United states. i used to own a Hayabusa when i lived in the states and it was just as dangerous. all motorcyclist knows that car drivers do not notice a bike when driving down the road and it is the same anywhere. on some roads in saudi, you may come across an idiot that wants to witness an accident, i have heared about this but in two years of riding everywhere, have never seen it. get your self in with some riding groups and they will let you know where not to go. my riding days came to an end when my brother flipped his bike on a farm road and nearly lost his life, i was their when it happened. i figured that it was not worth orphaning my newly borne baughter and desided to get rid of my bike, i still miss it. |
