What CAR do YOUNG PEOPLE prefer to buy ?? - I read that a RAV4 design appeals to few people under 40?

This is the exact quote that I read in an Australian magazine (I'm here in Canada):
<< design looks really staid - something grandpa would drive. can鈥檛 see too many under 40鈥檚 going for it.>>

If that's true, then would a Honda CR-V be better for someone in their 20's, or perhaps a Mazda 3 sport ??

I need something with a hatchback design so I can put my bike into the back, as well as some of my camping gear.

Well, I beg to disagree. That's quite opinionated, isn't it? Sense of style and perception of a product varies among different people. Here in the Philippines, RAV4's are much of the young professionals' choice, among others like the CR-V, Ford Escape, Nissan X-Trail (I don't know if they have this in American markets, but the Murano is another equivalent). Some dudes even put chrome wheels on their RAV's. Plus, Toyota's known the world over for its reliability.

But, Mazda3 sport ain't bad, I just heard from some people that the suspension is rather stiff (note: stiff, not firm), resulting in quite an uncomfortable ride.

Why not try another Toyota then, like the Highlander? Or all those others I've mentioned.

I just got a Mazda 3 hatchback and love it. though I am not in my 20's anymore! I've gotten a lot of good comments from the younger crowd.

Well I surf and motorcross so I like to keep it real.

Was the VW a GTI? if it was, you could try the Subaru WRX STI, though i dont reccomend it, because motor trend rated the sti lower than the GTI. It also costs more than $30K. And yes, it's true: Rav 4 s look very depressing. I also couldn't imagine a 20 year old driving a CR-v. maybe a 30 year old. are you 30? of you are, go for the CR-V, if you can stand the odd nose styling. I don't know much about the Mazda 3, but it must be good. If all else fails, just get a goddang Subaru Outback.
