What type of sport bike would be great for a beginner. Lookin for something cheap and a good make a model.?

Where could I find one?

I'd recommend a 500 cc or less for your first bike. They're quick enough to be fun but not so fast as to make learning difficult (a typical 600 will have about twice as much power as a 500, and is built for getting around a racetrack quickly, not making it easy to learn to ride). There's four good 500 cc and under models in the United States, in alphabetical order:

- Buell Blast
- Kawasaki Ninja 250
- Kawasaki Ninja 500
- Suzuki GS500F

I've owned a GS500F for the past year and would not hesitate to recommend it to any beginning rider.

You can often find good deals on used bikes on Cycle Trader or Craigslist. I've heard a few dealers have leftover 2007 Ninja 250s and are selling them very cheap, too, because everybody wants the 2008 model.

Kawasaki Ninja 250R. Look at the website and check out the new one. They made a HUGE change on looks this year and it actually looks pretty decent.

i recommend a 250 as well.

my first bike was a '98 yamaha yzf 600 (NOT the R6). it was heavy and didn't have a lot of torque; i'm glad i learned on it.

Like another reader, I would strongly recommend a Kawasaki Ninja 250. It is an affordable and reliable piece. Last summer I took a MSF class and there was A Ninja to use. I chose to ride a Honda Nighthawk but the Ninja has far superior disc brakes and ample power for it's size. Besides, the Ninja has been around for many years. If it wasn't any good it wouldn't still be a current model.

If you already know and understand how to drive a manual transmission, it helps learning a motorcycle because it's one less thing you have to focus on when learning. If you can practice discipline and restraint when riding, you may be fine. It's not all fun and games on a sportbike. Even if you ride perfect you need to know how to react when other cars and bikes and trucks don't drive so perfect. That comes from building new instincts and reflexes, and driving habits.

When I ride on the highway, I assume that every car I pass or that passes me, doesn't see me and is looking to come into my lane. I'm ready for any move that car makes half a second before he makes it.

You have to learn aerodynamics. If you get to close behind a rig, the wind can trap you there. When you pass along side of a rig the wind will pull you closer to the truck at one point and push you away at another. You have to learn all this and have counter balence and movements programmed into your body reflexes. You need lots of practice.

People recommend smaller CC bikes for beginners because most newbies are into it for the speed and flashiness of it and often underestimate the seriousness of riding safe. The temptation to tap into that power is usually too great to overcome. If you know you can and will respect the bike and get at least 3 thousand miles of practice before hitting the highway, and before group rides, then maybe you can start on a 600cc bike. Otherwise, help yourself out and start small.

Kawasaki 250 Ninja
if you want more power go with the Yamaha FZ6, or Suzuki SV650

I started on a ninja 250 but be advised you will be wanting a bigger bike in about three months and you WILL GET dogged by other bikers. It is a good starter bike but I would have to recommend the Suzuki SV650S. It has predictable throttle control, handles very well, enough power for passing on the interstate (a problem with the 250), and great street cred as a beginner bike. Also it will keep you satisfied longer. It tops out at 130ish compared to the ninja 250 at 100MPH. I am not implying that you need to go 130 but that the engine is working a lot smoother and lower RPMs going 70MPH because you are at a lower RPM.
Happy riding!

my first bike was a Honda cbr f4 it was a great bike
in about a month i wanted to step up and so will you
a 600cc is a great size.
if I was to do it all over again i would have gotten a Suzuki gsxr750 don't be afraid you wont regret it it will turn out to be perfect if u get a ninja 250 you will want to get rid of it in about 2 weeks guaranteed
