Buying my first bike?

I want to purchase a cheap used bike. Any suggestions as to what to look for in a used sport bike? Thanks

Sport bikes are often ridden very hard. Keep your eyes open for a bike that was bought by a newer rider and then decided they did not like the riding position of a sport bike. Perhaps a bike that has some scraped up plastic that the previous owner scratched up.

I would not expect to get away "cheap" in a motorcycle. You get what you pay for.
First - look up the Motorcycle Safety Foundation on the net. Go take a class. Learn how to ride before buying that bike.

When you start looking for the bike you want to buy bring a friend who knows something about bikes. Ask to see any records the seller has of maintenance done to the bike. There is so much stuff to look out for that it would be hard to explain it all in this forum.

Good bikes to look for - Kawasaki EX 250 or 500, Suzuki SV 650. Any of these will be plentiful on the used market and have enough performance to keep a new rider happy. All three are great bikes.

toso13 - good call on the GS 500. I forgot all about that one.
The Suzuki GS500 is a good beginner bike as well. The newer ones have fairings so you might want to avoid them in case you drop the bike.
Check out Ebay for people that bought a bike and are scared you-know-whatless of it. There are many bikes with less than 1000 miles. The next question you have to ask yourself is: "Am I ready for a sport bike?" If not, you could join the above mentioned group.
Of course a "straight" bike, preferably with some sort of service records. If it's a low mileage bike, so much the batter of course. You have to be at least a little suspicious if they say the bike has "never been down". You just need to feel the guy out, just like buying a car, on if you trust what he's saying or not. I'd almost feel better if he admitted to it being down at least once, but you never know. Does the guy seem like an older, experienced rider, or some punk kid, or a guy going through his second childhood/middle age crazy who probably shouldn't have tried to ride? Ask why it's for sale. Is he scared because he laid the bike down? Or moving up to a bigger cc bike or what? Concentrate on the "story" you're hearing too and try to sift through it to find the truth. Askif y the seller is the original owner or not, if not you will probably never know what the bike has all been through. ASK if you can get the bike inspected at a shop of your choosing prior to buying it.
