How to get into sport bikes w/out dying? |
I am looking at stuff like Honda CBR's but know that bikes like this are a lot to handle. Could I pull it off if I was careful or would I be completely overwhelmed? Is there a particular model that people looking into sportbikes can use to get acclimated to that power and speed? BTW, I am 6' 2" and am trying to avoid smaller bikes. Thanks I'd recommend taking a MSF motorcycle course near you. The MSF courses usually let you get used to riding on a 250 crusier and count as the test for your license. Beyond that I'd say get a 650 starting out because they are better in the turns than a larger bike an very nimble, but if you freak out you won't flip over. if you like it and feel comfortable, then move up the cc scale and get something that makes it hard to speak from the G's. welcome to the world of motorcycles, you're gonna be hooked. I agree completly. Look up MSF (motorcycle safety foundation) It is typically 1-2 days classroom and 2 days course. They can take someone who has never seen a motorcycle and in 2 days that person will be able to ride comfortably. As to the first bike.... that is all prefrence. Since you seem to be a big guy you can proably handle a good sized bike. After you get an endorsment look around at dealerships and take test drives. See what feels good. 650 is an excellent place to start. Starting out small in CC's and keeping your ego in check will go a long way in helping you stay alive.I have been riding sportbikes for about 7 years and have somewhere around 140,000 miles riding experience and still feel that the new literbikes are just too much power.I have seen a lot of new riders go out and buy the latest and greatest sportbike only to have it crashed within the first few thousand miles.I know you are trying to stay away from small bikes but I would recomend a 600cc at largest for a starter bike.I am 6'2" and 210lbs and my 600 will still get to over 100mph way fatser than ever neccesary and easliy wheelie if wanted.I really wish the demand was great enough that we could have 250-400cc sportbikes that had the kind of looks that would attract newer riders that were looking for something shiny and racebike like. In short, Take the MSF,start small, use your head, and if possible find a more experienced rider willing to help you with your skills which ever is fastest You won't die as long as you don't ride like an idiot. Just because it'll go fast doesn't mean you have to. dont do it.... |
