Sport Motorcycles?

I am looking to buy a sports bike, motorcycle at the end of the summer, and I am curious, what brands are there other than Kawasaki, honda, suzuki, and yamaha, b/c at Kawa, i found a ninja 250R, and it suited me better, I have 3600$ to spend, and I don't need anything too powerful. Also I am 16 years old, can I use a seperate insurance from my parents? Or must I be under theirs? Also, where is the best place to buy? Straight from Kawasaki, or a dealer of many moto's?

Unless you already have a lot of experience you should buy a used bike b/c it will get dropped. In fact, you should buy used anyway, because if you finance the bike you will need to get comprehensive insurance which will cost a fortune because of the plastics. I think you need to be on your parents' insurance because I don't think at 16 you can legally enter into a contract. I don't know how you would be able to buy a bike directly from Kawasaki, I am pretty sure you have to go to a dealer. Make sure to budget at least $500 for safety gear. If you buy used out of the paper do not take the guys helmet even if it looks undamaged. If you go to a dealer try to get them to throw in helmet, boots, jacket or at least give you a discount.

You should still buy used, but I am glad to see you already have your safety gear. I assume that the helmet is new? The shell of the helmet is the least important safety feature, the hard foam inside is designed to destructively deform to protect your head in the event of a crash. That is why knowing the history of your helmet is so important. The answers to your specific questions are:
1) None, you should stick with the Japanese bikes.
2) You can't have separate insurance until you turn 18.
3) You can't buy direct from Kawa, and anyway you should buy a used bike either through a dealer or private sale.

A Ninja 250R is a great bike to learn on but if I were you I'd get a used one for as cheap as possible. you can get em for around $1500-$1800 used. You have to be on your parents insurance until you're 18.
Doesn't matter if you have the money for a new one or not, get a used one, and put the rest of the money away for a year or two when you're ready to upgrade to a 600, or, to replace parts incase you crash. Don't act like crashing isn't a possibility either, and always dress for the crash, not for the ride.
is better to get a used bike at first cause its guarenteed u will drop it at least once in the parking lot before the end of ur first season of riding. ninja is probably the most popular brand, and for a sb, it would be the most forgiving. at least ur not hell bent on getting a race bike as a starter. it would be better to get used for ins. purposes also; that plastic will cost u a mint to fix, and all new bikes are mandated by the banks to have full coverage until the loan is paid off.
since it would be a 250cc, u would be able to ride this in the msf beginner's course...max for the brc is 500cc. be careful out there...cars are never to be trusted...ever.
You only mentioned the big 4 Japanese brands. You can get a 500cc Buell Blast, new, for $3600. But as was said, you'll probably drop it (or some twit at school will knock it over). You would be best off consulting with your parents' insurance agent on those specific questions.

Buying from an individual is usually cheaper, but you will have less recourse and after-the-sale support than from a dealer.

Be careful out there. And don't give us 30-something old farts a bad name by doing stupid crap like riding wheelies and taking huge risks in traffic.
