When riding a sports bike, why do i have to bend towards the turn and not away from it ? The word is "counter-steering"... You are not actually bending, you are "leaning"... Some people have even suggested bikes don't even NEED handlebars and have welded stationary handles onto the frame! Oh my, imagine a Harley with that set-up! Anyway, to the question, it has to do with the shape of a motorcycle tire and the gyroscopic effects being put upon the bike by both wheels spinning at speed and stuff, it's VERY scientific, and that's as far as I can go without getting too deep into a physics lesson. To enhance your turning ability. When riding you actually have to push steer, you have to slightly steer the wrong way just enough to lean the bike towards the turn and you lean with the bike so all the forces are going straight down to the road. i only can say, read this: http://www.rider-ed.com/tips/motorcycles... . its all about gravity and the turning angle. but think about it...would turning AWAY from it make much sense????? Center of gavity has as much to do it as counter balance. If you are leaning against the desired turn, you are creating a bad sitiuation. If you want a 'real feel' have a passenger on the back that leans against the leading direction..............that's a real attention getter. what you are refering to is counter steering and gyroscopic effect. basicly the tires because they are gyros do not want to lean into the turn therefore you lean off the side of the bike to load weight to counteract the effect. you steer VERY SLIGHTLY opposite of the direction you are going and maintain throttle or accellerate to load the suspention. |
