Which engine layout is the best for sports bike? V-twin or V-4 or else?

Just look at Ducati 999 V Twin in World Superbike Championship. Still capable to beat the big four cylinder machine from Japan. Handling vs Power, which one you choose?

Your statements are not exactly true. World Superbike is bias to support Ducati and they have been changing the rules every year so the Ducati will be able to race and win. Even today WSB is considering raising the engine size allowed by the V-twins by 300cc so that they can get more Horse power and keep at the top of the pack.

The V-twin vs the four on a level playing field, the four will stomp the v-twin. See AMA for actual results.

The straight 4 is the best for racing at the moment but in the future we might see 5 cylinders or big three cylinders. Looking at MotoGP is like looking at the motorcycle future. I would say they are 10-15 years ahead of the customer market.

I like Ducati, they have a great race history, and they have tweeked the v-twin better than anyone. They have done everything in their power to extend the life of those v-twin engines but we are seeing them die out now.

I hope they have the wisdom to make the change and start winning on the level playing field again. Their other choice is to do what Harley has done and embrace the v-twin till death do they part. It wasn鈥檛 that long ago that Harley actually raced and had a proud race history. They started loosing and gave up. They decided to stay v-twin and deny their racing roots. They basically got whooped by Honda then they started saying its not about going fast. Ducati could go down that walk of shame themselves in the next five years鈥 hope not.

If you plan to race you need to get a Jap bike. not only for reliability but racing does involve crashing. Rebuild a 999 one time and you will know what I am talking about.
thats a bit biased! it's a really hard question to answer because there's no real correct answer - four inlines are great for linear power, v-twins are great for massive low-down torque, and v-fours combine some of the better aspects of the two, but are expensive and difficult to design and produce. like v5's! its a matter of taste and preference..it'll take a while to find the best engine available.
(although while you're at it, take a look at the motoguzzi v8 for an awesome feat of engineering!)
the big v twins have a torque and slight handling advantage.my 748 is fantastic on track days..
An inline four of any given size will have the most top end power, but the least torque. The V-Twins do well in races because they are lighter and make mor elow end torque. The ultimate engine in any sport bike is the Ducati 1098. It is a V-Twin that makes huge horsepower and huge torque all accross the power band. Inline fours are awesome if you know how to ride them and max acceleration is your goal.
