When did people start wereing leather when they go on motorcycles/sport bikes??

When did leather start I would not be surpise if they started wereing black leather just to look hot

Leather garments were popular with riders from the very first motorcycles in the 1890's onwards for leather's excellent wind-stopping and abrasion resistant qualities.

I will take exception to 'xevias' statement:
"In high speed crashes, all leather really does is make sure the destroyed body parts are clumped together on the side of the road for easier clean up. A kevlar suit of armour can't protect a rider who wipes out going over 60mph."
There are thousands of professional road racers alive and still riding today after crashing at speeds well over 120mph, thanks to their leather suits. Kevlar is not necessarily the best material for this application, nor is it the best material for helmet construction.
People wear leather on bikes for protection. Do you know of a common clothing material that is stronger than leather?
My Mother and Father owned Harley's back in the 50's. They wore the leather for protection and they wore leather hats as they did not wear helmets. They also had pads in the leather to protect vital organs if they would wreck
the use of leather come from the tradtion of leather on horses as the use of horses went by the way side the style reamained but chainged every little bit each generation has changedit a bit the fifties changed the deep brown jackets of horse men to a black jacket the fifties also added shiny buttons and zippers but still very minimalist sixties went back a bit to the deep brown 70s saw a mix of both in the 80 stubs were sow in to the fabric small spikes not intrusive but very decative but still minamilistc the 90s threw the minimalism out the window and it was very decrative and shiney in the 00s so farits been a mix of all the past decades

WW2 was also a factor.

Pilots wore leather jackets to keep themselves warm on bombing missions. The motorcycle was a fast efficient method for scouts and messengers to travel. These riders would wear a version of the leather bomber jackets instead of their regular cotton jackets or wool winter coats for better protection when they wiped out.

Today, leather protects a rider from light road rash spills. It also gets pretty cold on a bike even in the summer time. In high speed crashes, all leather really does is make sure the destroyed body parts are clumped together on the side of the road for easier clean up. A kevlar suit of armour can't protect a rider who wipes out going over 60mph.

Because of that, I think you make a great point about it just looking cool.
Leather clothes for motorcyclist goes waaaay back. I think it was introduced a short time after the first guy went skidding down the road and discovered road rash.
WHEN THEY FOUND OUT IT RESISTS ASPHALT AND CONCRETE BETTER THAN DENIM
