What bike should i get as a 1st bike after my Direct Access?

I am hopefully going to be passing my Direct Access license in a months time and have been looking in to what bike i'm going to get once i have passed and am looking for some advice.

I always wanted a Kawasaki ZXR 750 when i was a teenager and thought that for my first bike this may be a good choice as they are reasonably cheap now, but having put a post on a Kawasaki forum i have had a lot of negative response with people saying it will be too heavy for a first bike, and it will be unforgiving etc etc.

Since then i've then looked at the ZXR 400 but a friend of a friend said that getting a 400 is pointless and to just go for a 600 ninja or something.

So now i'm all confused.

I dont want to spend too much on my first bike, maybe up to around 拢2k or maybe a bit more, and want a super sport style bike, preferably a Kawasaki but would consider others also.

Anyone able to give me some advice and answers?

Cheers

Your friend is either an idiot or doesn't ride a bike himself. The 600 is a race bike. It's not for a beginner at all. I'm not trying to sound like your mom, but with motorcycling, you have to learn how to be humble. You are everyone's whipping boy on the road because you have no protection. So check your ego at the door before you get on the bike. You really need to use your head on this one. I used to work at a Harley dealership and people would come in all the time looking for a Harley for their first bike. They are just too heavy for a beginner. Word of advice, stay at 500 or smaller. 500 to 600 is a giant leap with those sport bikes. If you want the 600, save your self $10k and just buy a revolver. That way you can end your life quickly and not have to risk all that rehab as an amputee.
For a first bike you don't want want a modern sports 600, they are too fast and too focused on speed, they are crap for learning the skills on. You won't go far wrong on 400, a honda VFR or CBR if you like that sort of bike, plus they will keep their value when you sell it. Try not to buy with your heart for your first bike, you have a high chance a silly low speed spill due to lack of experience. You want to think with your head and go for something that is comfy to ride or you will get fed up with biking very quickly. Good luck and live the dream.
Biking for 18 years. Owned everything from a TS50X to a GSXR750.
Unfortunately I must disagree with the consensous that as a beginner you must get a bike 500cc or smaller. If you are anywhere near my size and you are a causious, carefull and attentive driver, you will most likely ride your bike the same way. If you are honest with yourself and you make sure you get used to your bike on private roads and parking lots before you get on the freeway, you should not have a problem getting a 600cc bike. For starters the weight of a 600cc bike is not crazy heavy. Its more about balance and throttle control. Be true to your abilities, take your time and stay safe.
First bike was 600cc's. I'm 6'1 208lbs
Times have changed. This debate didn't used to happen. I would support the idea of going with a 400 - 500 first. Nothing too outrageous. Smaller engines will still go illegally fast, and will still beat 95% of cars from the lights. I'm not advocating that, just pointing out that a "small" bike is still capable of great fun and great danger.

Don't just be a Sunday rider. Go out in a range of weathers - get the right kit. Learn about your bike. Consider touring. You don't need a huge bike to tour. I've had touring holidays on a 400, and a 1200. Just get your mindset right before you go.

You'll pass your test - but you will still be learning. I'm still learning now. Bike technology changes, road conditions change, the rules change. After a year or so get yourself some advanced riding training - it will improve your riding at all speeds.

Think about it. It's too good to be left to Sundays, and too good to have a simple minded "got-to-drive-fast" mind-set. Enjoy your riding.
