What's a good starter motorcycle?

Hi. I really want to get into Sport bikes. I'm 19 and want to get my license and obviously a bike. Ultimately I would like to have a Honda CBR1000rr. But I heard, that you can't learn directly on such a bike, its too powerful. So for the beginning, is a 600 too big also? Should I get one of those 250cc till I learn and then buy the big one? Thanks

Here in PA they offer free motorcycle safety course and provide motorcycles for the course, They are 250's and most of them are Honda Shadows. These are good training cycles and are not very expensive. They start out teaching you the trip precheck through to avoiding hazards on the road. We had 5 people in our class who have never driven a motorcycle, one of which never even been on a motorcycle before. Everybody passed the four day class and received their license. Try a smaller bike and work your way up until you become more experienced. However, if this will be your first bike buy used and pay cash, get the experience of riding before moving up to bigger and more expensive bikes. I have had friends who bought big bikes like Goldwings and rode only a few times then selling them at a loss because they weren't ready for a big bike. Nothing wrong with starting small and working up to bigger later on. In fact the smaller bike will normally sell quicker when you are ready to move up, then use the money for your next bike. Unless you don't mind paying 10-20 times more for motorcycle insurance, I would stay away from crotch rockets, insurance companies consider these high risk and some people are complaining about insurance as high as $2000 per year. The cost of insurance is probably the #1 reason bikers sell their Sportbikes. Check out your rates before you buy, also if you take a safety course you will save on insurance.
any of the ones 250 to 500 cc should be good
i would not go directly from a 250 to a 1000. take your
time to learn. buy a 250 or 500 used if you can. give
it a good year on a gs 500 that is a suzuki then save
your money for one of the 600 bikes.
A 600 is a good idea..if you haven't ridden dirt bike or enduro. I would take class. they ues 250 enduros and let you take your test on one.
colorado Rider
This isn't a real answer but when you get to the high power riders DO NOT GET A DUCATTI they are way to powerful get that some other time. Now I recommend a Honda or Suzuki.
The ducati is way to powerful? come on moron read the specs the Japanese bikes put out like 40 to 60 more horse power than the 999. The 1098 is starting to get close, at least what is leaking out about them, but since nobody is putting them on dynos yet. I'd start on a cheap used 500cc or less job, learn the basics then buy your dream bike. 1000cc bikes are just as easy to ride as the little ones unless you cant control your wrists. Modern performance liter bikes and 600s for that matter are ***** cats and will idle around town all day w/o any problems. If youre a moron and cant control your wrist sure they can go super fast and spit you off.
