Whats a good beginning motorcycle?

is there anything that i should look for (other than price) when searching for a bike? i dont have any experience. i live in NY. i was looking into a sport bike (not for racing) and any suggestions would be welcome

My first bike was a BMW 650. I got the straight street version, not the hybrid. It was a perfect first bike for a few reasons. First of all it was totally reliable. Most used Harleys have little quirks that make them hard to ride, and a new one costs as much as a car. As a new biker I needed to know that my bike wasn't going to break down on the side of the road. I needed to learn to ride not to service my bike. Secondly the handling is perfect! It rides so smooth that after my first year on it I felt totally comfortable on two wheels. The first time I ever dipped into a sweeper turn I didn't get any wobble or shake. It is a BMW after all. That is huge for a new biker. The bike HAS TO BE predictable. That bike had plenty of top end for me, 120mph. So I didn't feel the need to upgrade right away. The low end torque gave me all the control I could ever ask for. The dry weight was comprable to a sport bike so if I did lay it down I was able to pick it up myself!! ( I am a 120lb woman) The only bad thing is the price but you can usually find used ones for a reasonable price. Trust me, you do not want a beater cheapo for a first bike. You will get high speed wobbles and shimmy and shake in your turns. That does not inspire confidence. Plus if it is too small you will have to buy a new bike after a year and you won't be able to ride with other bikers cause you will be too slow. The 250 rebel will lag big time on the highway and make you a perfect target for being rear ended. NOT GOOD ON A BIKE! I was able to ride with the best of my biker buddies on that beamer. Plus it has great styling and is really unique. I encourage all new riders to check it out. (they also come in an on and off road version if you see dirt roads in your future)Enjoy!! Keep the shiny side up!
harley
A Harley. They wear like iron and are very smooth to ride.
Get something that you feel comfortable holding up. The higher the # on the bike the heavier. Try a 600.
Sport bike...you mean like Honda? Just get a harley!

The Honda Rebel 250 is the best beginner bike. You can buy one new for around $2500. It's good on gas, lighter weight, and easy to ride around on. It's got some speed, but nothing that will get you in trouble.
