First motorcycle? |
I just started looking around for my first bike and was wondering if anyone could recommend anything I won't kill myself on, but also will not get bored with after I get some experience. A couple of my buddies have sport bikes and that is what I am interested in too. First off, take the MSF course. It's like 3 days, you're on almost like toy bikes- but it's fun and it will probably save your life. They start with the extreme basics...they even teach 40 year old women how to ride. I knew how to ride before the class, but it honestly helped quite a bit. As for not killing yourself, you must ride within your own abilities, not your riding buddies. If you want increase your abilities, do it on country'ish back roads and push just a little more each time. I live in Oregon and in the Willamette Valley there's tons of farmland (no blind corners) just a few miles out of the city with hardly any traffic- that's where I started pushing myself. I had this section of road memorized; it was like my own racetrack. It had a great variety: several 3/4 mile long straights, lots of sweepers and hairpin corners, some elevation change and even a decreasing radius corner. If you have the time, ride everyday for an hour or two and you'll be a great rider within a month. But be prepared that you could become a cripple or die everytime you suit up and take off on the bike. In all honesty, if you're not a jackass you could easily start on something like a Honda CBR F4i. It's a great all around bike. They're fuel injected, have a nice analogue* tach and a digital speedo. I would go for a pre-banana seat model...after the RR600 came out in 2004'ish the F4i was given a single banana seat and passed off as a sort of mini VFR as the RR600 become their 600 SuperSport. So yeah, look into an F4i. Honda quality, reliability and resale. Here's a few pics of my first bike. (I currently have a new GSX-R 600) It was a 2001 model and had the best Honda paint scheme for an F4i- their Team Red & White. This bike was perfect, one owner, never laid down, dealer maintenance with all receipts. I added the slip on high mount muffler. Source(s): I'm an addicted sport rider (4 years +). ninja 500 or if tyou have some experiance a 600 I sold my Ninja 636, my cruiser, the rest of my 8 bikes but i am holding on to my Ninja 250 because it's the best bike ever. aww hell, I won't lie to you , the Ninja 636 was my first bike and I miss doing 140 MPH from one stoplight to the next.. But the Ninja 250 is my keeper for life now. Get a 600 like a 1998 CBR or a 500 like a Ninja500 or Suzuki GS500. But I gotta tell ya! I ride my 250 NINJA laughing under my helmet like a cartoon villain!! I'm saving piles of money on gas and it goes 109 MPH on the interstate! My suggestion Andy, would be to find a used Ninja 250 for your first bike. You will get bored with the 250 after a season of riding, but it is a cheap bike (especially used) and since it is inevitable that you will lay the bike down during your learning curve, a used, inexpensive bike would be much better to lay down than a new sportbike fully decked out in new (expensive) plastic. After a season of the 250, then you can go for a 600cc bike which should keep you interested for several seasons easily. get the same as i had a bsa road rocket 1954 wish i had it today, I would recommend a Buell Blast. Its a small, sporty and fast 492cc. Styled somewhere between a standard and a sport bike its fast enough in city to keep up with the big boys. The only areas that the Blast is short in is weight and highway speeds over 70mph. I love my bike. I have out grown it some only because I really want a crusier, but I decided that I am going to keep it and make it a custom racer. Not bad on price either compared to your average Crotch Rocket. I picked up my 2003 for just over $2000. Good luck. Oh yeah... and take the MSF course. Its the best idea any newbie can do. *Ride on the dark side* |
