Motorcycle help? |
I am completely clueless on what motorcycle I should start on. I do not know anything about them. I am going to take lessons at my local Honda place before getting on one. Now, what's a really good bike to start out with? what should I be looking for? I'm only 5'7 and weigh 140 pounds. I'm more geared to sport bikes... What kind of helmet should I use? What should I wear? Are there any good websites that you guys recommend for learning about motorcycles? Lots of questions here. What bike? A perfect bike is something that's used, not the fastest thing in the world, and fits you. I'd go with an SV 650 or used Ducati Monster for you. Maybe a 2nd line sportbike like a YZF600R (not the R6), GS500E, Ninja 500, something in that general area. Helmet? You're looking for two things. First, that it's DOT and/or Snell certified, and second, that it fits WELL. Try it on for at least 30 minutes or so before you buy it. There are differently shaped helmets for differently shaped heads. Personally, I wouldn't ride without a full-face helmet, but any helmet you wear is better than one you don't. Other gear? Jacket, gloves, boots, and preferably motorcycle-specific pants. Try newenough.com or motorcyclecloseouts.com for some good deals. Even so, make sure that you budge at least 500-600 for other gear, and buy them BEFORE you buy the bike. Other good websites? I go to advrider.com a lot, though it's not as sportbike oriented as you seem to be. Good luck getting through the class and make sure you get your license and insurance, too. you should start of with a suzuki gsxr 600 or 750 learners throw bikes down the road.... I did..(it was a long while ago).. everyone does at some stage... these people that say "Ive been riding 20 years & never dropped the bike" are telling lies.... So buy cheap & small... 250cc hondas are a good start... in 6 months you can sell it for the same price you paid for it(as long as you havent done too much damage when you dropped it).. then you buy something a bit newer & bigger.. say that SV 650 the other poster was talking about... 6 months later you can trade it in on the bike you have decided you want..( you will have more of an idea after riding a year).. Safety gear.... buy the best you can afford... people with $10 heads buy $10 helmets... gloves ,jacket, helmet are the bare minimum.. pants , boots, back brace, full leathers, you can spend a fortune.. but a good helmet ,Jacket & gloves should set you back $800.. just went & looked at the profile... not sure where in the world you are... M/C safety course.. go & do one.. it will save your life.. plenty of sites to look at for learner riders..surf the net.. dans motorcycle pages give lots of info on all sorts of bike related subjects.. http://www.dansmc.com/index.htm... theres lots of fix it bits & general tips... 35years riding & counting |
