Can I build a motorcycle? |
I want to build a motorcycle from the ground up. Preferably a sport bike. How long does it take, and around how much money would it cost? I hope to get it started around now and finish before may, putting in some work every day. I know nothing about building motorcycles, but will be working with some experts who will help me out. Is this project possible? Can I do it before May? Any feedback or advice would be appreciated. yes Watch American Choppers!! check out www.hotbikeweb.com I think you'll like it yes you can, I know you're not gunna machine all the parts like rims and engine. you will have to use those from other bikes, you build the frame, seat, gastank, fenders, etc, and add the other stuff after, Its not too hard, just buy a wrecked bike and use the parts you can, and by the other, maybe, $3,000, but more like $5,000. good luck. From a master mechanic of 35 years--it sounds like this is your first project, and this is definitely NOT something beginners should tackle. Your experienced help usually loses interest and walks out half way through the project, and YOU are left holding a lot of half-finished parts and scratching your...head. Buy a cheap, older bike, around $2,500 for a decent one, get some experience with it, and if you are still interested in doing this when you have a steady income, plan on spending $10,000-$30,000 for a tires-up custom machine--with lots of blood, sweat and tears. May you always have a dream, and the good sense to not shoot yourself in the foot with it. :-} It can be done in that time frame provided you have all the parts you need I built a H.D. chopper from the ground up in less than 3months I would have had it done sooner but my finances controlled the amount of parts I could afford to buy at one time My Total cost was under $ 4 grand But this was only because a lot of the pars I used to build it were obtained at swap meets. This was also the 1st bike I ever built from the ground up I had very little help on it from a friend of mine who has built a large number of them Yes, it can be done. Custom made parts will take longer/cost more than off the shelf items. New parts are more expensive than refurbished used parts. Build it all the way up before paint/chrome/etc. (Nothing will break out the cussin' dictionary quicker than discovering you need to weld on a bracket you forgot, AFTER everything is painted/chromed!). |
