Question about the Naked style Suzuki GS500...?

I've been doing a lot of research on the Suzuki GS500's and I want to get one. I have found that the older ones are lighter but they are the faring-less "naked" style, which I really don't like. The newer ones look more like "actual" sport bikes, and have farings but they are a lot heavier. Does anyone know if there is any way to add farings to the naked style bikes? Also, is it the engine that weighs more on the newer ones? or is it the lack of farings?

If you want some aftermarket fairings for it check out the Titan II's:

They look decent, but if this is your first bike you should definitely leave the fairings off. I started riding a few years ago and my first bike was a 2002 gs500 and i was VERY HAPPY that I didn't get the gs500F, the fully faired version. Basically I dropped the bike about 3 times at a standstill during various times. It's a relatively light bike, but its still 300-400lbs if I remember correctly, so thats pretty hard to pick up if it starts to tip. One time it even fell onto my leg and I landed in a bush! That was quite the little show I put on trying to get it off me.

Chances are you are going to drop your bike, and it would really suck to have to pay for all those scratched up fairings. If you have more questions about the GS check out http://www.bestbeginnermotorcycles.com... , it has a good review on the GS, and just some good guides in general if you are a new rider. the motor has not changed in years.

You can add a fairing. Most popular on the old GS is a "cafe style" headlight fairing.

more GS info than you could ever want is at:

Nope - all that extra weight is from the fairings...

You can add fairings to the naked style one, but you have to understand that "fairing" is base speak for a cafe style fairing with windscreen - not a full body kit that I think youre thinking of.... I am not sure if they sell entire body kits for the GS - I know Suzuki is making them for the SV, so who knows...why not call your local Suzook dealer? Or, check the back of Cycle World magazine - there is a company that makes some futuristic looking fairings for naked bikes...

Good luck!
The motor for that bike is ancient. It originally was the gs450 of the late 70s. Its current configuration has been around since the late eighties. The fairing is new, you could always mount race fairings on it and cut holes for whatever you run for a headlight. Welding and body work skills are required however.
If it's your first bike go with an older one without fairings. Fairings break to easy when you drop it and the great majority of new riders drop their bike at one point or another. After you've had it a litle while and built you're experiance and skill up, then sell it and get a better full fairing bike, like a CBR600F3, F4, or F4i.
The gs 500e edition is the naked bike while the f edition is the one with fairings. You can add fairings to e models they do sell kits. if you go to www.gstwin.com they show you how to do it. Although keep this in mind the kits you will get for the e model are not as good as the f model. that is because the f models were designed for fairngs..
there are a few problems with the fairings added to these bikes. They act as giant sails that catch the wind and push the bike from side to side.
The engine has changed over the years.. For insatnce they mess with the carb design a little bit and the timing rotor.
On the newer models you cant do a timing advace.

As far as weight goes its not a huge difference when you are riding.
id say go with an e model.
1 if you drop it (and you will) most likely there wont be any damage.
2. riding a naked bike is a totaly different feeling then riding one that isnt.

I have a 96 and i love it ... easy to work on and fun to ride.
