What year did the MK 4 Escort come out? |
i want to buy one for my b/f to learn to drive as he only rides a sports bike last 17 yrs & i want him to drive me round so i want to buy him a runabout escort. The Cortina was aimed at the expanding fleet market, it was designed to be reliable and cheap to run and was sold at a low price, but still enough to make a profit. Ford had astutely researched the car market and produced a product fleet buyers wanted. Fleet buyers were not interested in advanced cars if they were going to be unreliable and spend most of their time in garages being repaired. For the rest of the 1960's the Cortina battled it out with the BMC ADO16 1100/1300 for sales supremacy. In 1966 the re-styled MK2 appeared, and in 1970 the larger MK3. The MK3 correctly anticipated the demand for larger cars and was itself superceded by the MK4 in 1976. http://www.austin-rover.co.uk/index.htm?... D or E reg ... so 1986 ish Yes the mk4 was launched in late 1986, C or D reg. They were produced until 1991. The later models were the best, there were special editions called the Eclipse and they had spoilers and many were blue. Most surviving models are convertable or sporty ones that were cherished. By todays standard they are very poor performers, and many have long gone, the Focus is a much better car. To find a good Escort though, you should do an autotrader.co.uk search, and if you sign in, you can do an advanced search, for low mileage cars and even specify the colour you want and how many doors etc, try and find one that has had one owner, you may have to travel 100 miles, but it is a day out. The Mk 4 had an OHC engine (overhead cam) this made the engine quite noisy, but that is not really a problem. The car is easy to maintain and to run, the 1100 cc is the smallest engine, the 1400 is the best engine in the MK4. There is also a good 1.8 diesel if you can find one. Personally, I think a Ford KA is a much better car, better than a Fiesta and an old Escort. The KA was very advanced for it's time, and is a much safer car. ESCORT This is the MK5 Escort test, made from 1992-1996, this might give you a more educated view of what you are buying, after the Mk5 the MK 6 was made until the Focus replaced it but the MK 6 was basicly the same shell.
