Buying a first motorcycle. Im 20 years old, 5' 10" and 165 lbs. Should I look at 250's or would a 600 be fine?

I have little to no previous riding experience but I do plan on taking a MSF and I have experienced riders close to me to learn from and ride with. I definitely would like something that I could keep for more than a year and I'm interested in sport bikes. Could you give me some input?

A 250 would be way too small and underpowered for you. Go with a 600 or bigger as long as you use your head. Remember you can smash yourself up with either size. With the 600, at least you won't have to go through the hassle of buying and selling another bike in a short period of time. I learned to ride on an XLCH 1000 Sportster and after a year it was too small. I wanted a big twin. I also rode a Kawasaki EX500 for awhile and it was very fast. However, it was a little too light for me on the freeways around big trucks or strong winds. Now I ride a 883 Sportster for commuting and a 95 ci Fatboy for fun. I rode my girlfriend's Ninja 250 that she bought as a starter bike and found it way too small, underpowered, and uncomfortable for my tastes. But, I've been riding for 30 years. However, it probably was good for her. She is only 5' 4". She now rides a Ducati Monster 600.
Go bigger than a 600. Don't worry about being a beginner. You get used used to it in about 2 weeks. If you want nimble, go with a 750, brute power, go with a 1000 or more. I prefer 750s.

please DEAR GOD, don't get a 250. That's what 13 year old wanna be, "thugs" ride. I'd say stick with the 600, or a 750 if you can find one. Your height would out you into the 900 bracket with relative ease however, since you're a newbie rider, the 600 would be fine. Kawasaki and Honda make nice 600 sport bikes that are both good in terms of price and performance. Even for a couple years or so, the 600 will be good enough for you until you're ready to jump to the 1000+ bikes.
Ah, another beginning motorcyclist who likes sport bikes...

The morgue is full of you guys.

If you haven't really ridden before, you should probably pick up a used smaller bike - preferably a dirt bike, that way if (read: when) you fall off of it, you don't destroy a really nice bike. Sport bikes don't drop well due to all of the extra plastic crap on them.

Once you get a little experience, then take a look around for a good bike - if you decide to go the sport route, more power to you, but they are uncomfortable, and can be too much for someone that doesn't have experience riding one.

#1 most important rule: pretend like you are invisible to other drivers.

This will keep you from being surprised when someone suddenly whips across three lanes and slams on their brakes in front of you.

#2 treat every unknown curve as a gravel strewn reducing radius curve that banks the wrong way.

Good luck - and good riding!
Given your size, I guarantee you'll want an upgrade in less than a year if you get the 250cc bike. The flip side is that 600cc sport bikes are incredibly quick today, so you really do need to take it easy and get well acquainted with the bike.

These machines are quite sophisticated with incredible acceleration and braking, so developing your skills as a driver is extremely important. In my experience (19 bikes over 30 years), a large percentage of the driving population simplyis not aware of motorcycles. For that reason I assume that every car intends to do me harm and drive defensively.

In order to be prepared to take evasive action, you need to practice evasive manuvers and hard braking. That can be done in deserted parking parking lots.

You will have a great time riding if you prepare for yourself. Good luck!
Well a 250 mm or 600 mm URN ? .

I guesse it depends on how much of you

is left , after you crash the thing !!!!!!!!!.

Do you have any loved ones ? , Ask them .!!!!
