What are the advantages of overhead cams compared to push-rods?

I have had many bikes. Some super fast sports bikes with over head cams. Now I have an old bmw boxer with push rods. I fell in love with these engines the first time I had to work on one. I can have a cylinder off and the piston in my hand in under 15 minutes? This makes me wonder, why are overhead cams the go? They are more labour intensive to work on and mechanically more complicated.

PLEASE NO CUT AND PASTE ANSWERS. Simple answers like "it is x% more efficient, or "valve can stay open longer delivery more power" will do.

But seriously, are they that much better?

Unfortunately pushrods can bend or get thrown when a valve sticks even temporarily.
They add to the reciprocating weight, and absorb power.
True OHC's can be a pain shimming up, but you are getting the most direct drive, and a direct transfer of motion, whether to a rocker arm or a cam follower, attached to the valve.
On some engines with pushrods you have to get the engine out to remove the camshaft, so ease of maintenance depends on what actually goes wrong. As for my personal preference overhead cam, oh and they are generally quieter than pushrod engines.
