What is considered a lot of mileage? |
I was looking at craigslist.org for motorcycles, sports bikes to be exact, and the highest I noticed was 30,000 miles. Is that a lot?? At what mileage do people start replacing their engines? How many miles before a well-cared engine dies? It really depends on the type of bike and how many miles. A Goldwing or a BMW can easily get 100k on them without major rebuild. A sport bike that is rode hard and not maintained could need a new motor in 10k. A lot of sports bikes don't make high mileage because they are wintered a lot. That is they are put up for the winter and don't get rode. A lot of times they don't get maintained either, so come the riding season, they get abused. Plus a lot of people find out they just aren't into riding as much as they thought so they let them sit. Seals crack and gaskets get dried out, so they die when they finally do get ridden. That's unknown. I would not buy any bike w/ over 5000 miles on it. Because you don't know how hard that person road the bike. A lot of mileage is buying an 82' CSR 650 Import ... Over 25yrs old! And the clocks show 60,000 ... I think you can triple that ... lol You can do website checks for various bikes and also check out chat or clubs catering to the specific bikes. They will usually tell you about general problems with the engine, transmission etc., life expectancy and what parts will need to be replace because of defects. Other than that it depends, some vehicles no matter if they are autos, bikes or anything else are flawed and will break down no matter what - the is the gambling part of owning one. But, generally the miles are not what is most important. A bike which has been keep indoors (or not exposed to the elements), had all the routine checks and has been well maintained and any problems were fixed when they occurred will be a better bet at 30,000 miles that a bike a 5,000 that has been neglected. You can find list of things to look for and check out when buying a bike. But, pay attention to the owner you can tell a lot buy just talking to people that will usually give you a clue to how well they took care of it. Experience a) Los Angeles Times says that there are 40 fatalities per million miles, which works out to 1 fatality per 25,000 miles. Assuming a motorcycle which kills its rider is totalled, then a sportbike with more than 25,000 miles has lasted longer than average! b) Police forces around here (California) retire their motorcycles at 60,000 and 70,000 miles. I've seen Kawasaki police bikes, and some Goldwings, for sale with 140,000 miles on them! c) I saw a Kawasaki Ninja 500 on craigslist with 80,000 miles on it!! d) My current motorcycle, a 1985 Yamaha Virago 700 ratbike, has 80,000+ miles on it. e) My previous motorcycle, a 1986 Honda Nighthawk 450, was ready for a rebuild at 56,000 miles. I gave it away... to someone who did the rebuild. For all I know, some poor guy is still riding it. |
