Should I be worried...? |
I have a 4.5 year old daughter who is obsessed with anything masculine. She only has boys around to play with, so I suppose it's no wonder that she only likes to play with cars and such, not dolls. She also likes to wear boy clothes and sometimes says that she's not a girl, but is a boy. I have allowed her to wear some boy pajamas, but not everyday clothes. She is very active, and has played t-ball, soccer, football, karate and basketball. In fact, basketball was her first word! She is very good at sports, has been riding a bike without training wheels since she was three, and excels in most everything, My husband insists that she is just a tomboy and will grow out of it. There are times that she wants to wear dresses, but those times are becoming few and far between. I'm wondering if anyone else has had experience with this? When should I be worried? Thanks! i think that it is great that she can hold her own with the boys... i have 2 boys and 1 little girl who is also 4... and let me tell you she can hang in there right with em..lol.. my daughter likes cars, karate, soccer etc... but she also enjoys her barbies and dresses... i would probably feel a little sad if she wouldn't let me dress her up and paint her nails just because she's my only little girl... she has her time being a tomboy but we also make time to do girly things together... like dress up tea party's and such... i wouldn't be so worried about this right now she is only 4 and this is probably just a phase... i have a cousin that was raised by a single father and i remember as a young child watching her dressed in overalls helping her dad work on lawnmowers and cars with greese all over her head to toe...lol... she loved doing all the boy things and now she is beautiful woman with a husband and a little girl of her own... my opinion is as long as she is happy and healthy then let let her be who she want's to be you only get one childhood if she would rather throw a football around or play in the mud then let her... of course she is going to want to act like the kids that she is around most. does she have any girl friends? is she in preschool where she can be around other girls? if you are THAT worried then you should put her in one (for many other reasons, too.) but she will grow out of it. she is only 4! I'm 16.. I was tomboy off and on. And couldn't quite figure my self out until I was about 13. Your daughters four.. she most likley will grow out of the phase. I know you think I'm "Young with no expeiriance" or whatever but my advice.. Take her out to do something femine like getting her nails painted light pink or maybe even decorate her room a little more flowery girlish type thing. Intoduce her into some girl-friends her age. Good luck and have some fun =] -Morgan Myself. There is nothing wrong with it. I have three girls and my middle one thinks she is a boy she is now eight. I don't push to hard. I was also like that, I didn't grow out of it until I was 20. She's going to be what she wants to be. I'll bet she'll want to be girly someday. There's no point being worried. While it's true that some children eschew their gender role at a very young age, it's also true that many children act like the other gender but grow up to be straight and normal. If your daughter was expressing interest in BEING a boy, then I'd say it's possible she grows up to have a gender identity disorder. While that'll be difficult, it's not the end of the world. If she just likes so-called boy THINGS, then who cares. It's 2007, there's no rule that says girls have to wear pink, can't wear clothes from the boys section, can't like cars and dirt and sports, etc etc. She likes what she likes, it doesn't have any actual bearing on her gender identity (unless she's said she wants to BE a boy, incessantly, with vigor). It just means she's apparently more progressive than you. (Oh, also, liking boy things doesn't mean she'll grow up to be a lesbian--there's plently of lesbians who like girl things too.) |
