Biking/Cycling to lose weight.. is it enough cardio?

I am 20 years old, 5'9, and 230 pounds. I have been in sports all my life, and I'm not in terrible shape but I understand I have a lot of weight to lose to become healthy again.

I started to ride my bike about 6 miles a day. Biking this much and maintaining a healthy diet, should I begin to see results?

I am concerned as to whether this bike riding program raises my heart rate enough to burn a sufficient amount of calories.

I'd appreciate any comments/suggestions from people who have similar experiences, trainers, etc.

Thanks!

Biking will work, but make sure to do more mileage than that. Six miles is fine if you're only doing it for a half hour-- to see real benefits from biking, you must be going at least 12 mph! So... I'd suggest actually going at 12 mph and going for a full hour BECAUSE biking does use less calories than cardio (and doesn't work the full body the way that cardio does). At the same time, considering your weight, you should probably start out with mostly biking.

Make sure you don't get too habitual with it-- vary the pace, vary where you bike to, try to go up hills... it'll keep your caloric burning higher. Source(s): I bike 8 miles in a half hour two days a week, plus run, and weight train. Personal experience.
I used to have serious over weight problem for years and I was the kind of people quite easily get sick & tired. Thank god, once I met a new friend in a family gathering and he told me a very good site that I later found so helpful. The site taught me great workouts and diet tips and showed me what I had been doing wrong to address my over weight problem... Here is the good thing and you might wanna to check out more. Good luck!

Biking 6 miles does not seem to be a long enough workout.

Eat only when hungry and not more than thrice a day. Nothing other than water in between. Include plenty of uncooked vegetables and fruits in each meal, preferably 50%. Chew each morsel at least 32 times to activate ur body to generate signals of hunger/fullness. Obey these signals.

Take light exercises and brisk walks regularly preferably twice a day.

U will achieve what u have not even dreamt and that too in a reasonable time. Do not be in a hurry.
You should be in good health.

I brisk walk 4miles a day 5 times a week. And lost 31 lbs on low carb, low fat, high fibre, high protein.

I am thinking that biking 6 miles will burn lesser fats and calories than my walking 4 miles. So pedal more.

Don't forget to eat lots of veggies, lean meat and complex carbs to lose that weight!
