Why can't I stick to dieting :-(?

last time I checked I think I was 9.8, I'm not really fat, I'm quite pear shaped and have abit of a bum, tummy and my thighs are quite big. I want to go on a stable diet though. I used to be really good at it when I was 17 and 18 with a good figure but at 19 I really find it hard to do, I believe I can do it then I just eat loads of crap and then put on more weight :( I've tried reading some willpower books but it just doesn't work for me. I sometimes go on bike rides and walk alot, I do strecthing excercises everyday and sometimes do the hula hoop but I'm not much into sports so please help me on how to get motivated to lose weight because I just feel like staying in and not bothering to see people cuz I just feel down that I can;t lose weight, it sounds silly but I want to be skinny. :(

first off your mistake is using the four letter word: "D-I-E-T"

diets are something people go off and on, like you have and when they go off it, they usually gain back more weight than they lost in the first place. this is called "yo-yo dieting".

you need to change the way you approach food and eating.

I would strongly suggest you read some nutrition books.

most so called "diets" try to sell thier method, most of them are sound information (except FAtkins), however they focus on or overcomplicate things to differentiate themselves from all the others out there to sell.

your first step should be writing down everything you eat and finding ways to substitute these foods for healthier ones. don't focus on calories just yet.

you need a plan of attack so you take it one step at a time.

switch out all the soda drinks and junk food with healthy snacks. What is healthy? cut back on the sugar and trans and saturated fats. Sugar is the worst for you, but this is stage one. for now switch them with fruits, berries are the better types take your pick (raspberries, blueberries, blackberries, strawberries).

cut all the foods with Trans fat and High Fructose Corn Syrup out of your diet. trans fat is hard for the body to process (look it up and you will get a good scare) and HFCS is a sugar substitute that unlike sugar you will not feel full- at least with sugar, at some point you will feel full. HFCS is also going to raise your diabetes risk by 80% more than it is now.

next make sure you add vegetables with EVERY meal.

you need to realize that excercise is not a substitute.

focus on eating more protien, if you are going to be working out that is. if not then don't overdo it. protien loading helps athletes and people working out optimize thier performance.

eat 3 meals and 3 snacks a day- they should be HEALTHY meals and healthy snacks.

one meal a week eat whatever you want. you want to cheat, go ahead.

Step 2- fine tune your new eating approach. look up the Glycemic Load- the glycemic index is inherently flawed as it doesn't take serving size into account.
aim for foods that are considered to have a low glycemic load.

A good starter book for nutrition information is: eat drink and be healthy, the harvard medical school guide to healthy eating. it is a fairly easy read compared to nutrition books- also there is always a danger of getting too much info as it will drive you nuts.

start with this, see how it works for you and then modify it.

As far as excercise goes, the optimal excercise for you is going to be high intensity interval training for cardio, and circuit training for weights (which builds LEAN not big, muscle which in turn increases your metabolism).

the best excercise for you to do is one you will stick to. It might be the most efficient excercise but if you don't do it it doesn't do you any good.

EDIT: it also sounds like you are somewhat depressed, i'm no shrink but maybe your fear and low self image are to the point you should find someone to talk to if you are staying in the house to avoid seeing people.
one has to really want to lose it in order to stick with it

You do know that some people are genetically big, right? There are people who are genetically muscle-toned and also really skinny. You could have the potential, but exersize and healthy food is your best bet. Don't try the pills or scams, just stick to exersizing. If that doesn't work at all, then you're just naturally a bigger person.
First off who cares what people think of you, you shouldn't let your weight make you want to stay inside..Get motivated, Eat really healthy and work out alot. If your exercising then eating bad food its not worth it, I have something called Celiac sprue, where I cant eat wheat or gluten, and I know Ive lost tons of weight staying away from that kinds of food, Maybe you should try a diet like that for a little bit!..Good luck!
The mindset of "going on a diet" dooms many. Going on a diet doesn't help anyone. A little tweak to your lifestyle would be a more accurate way to put it. I don't have a lot of time to write a bunch here so to be brief, eating is ok.

1) Cut out the sugar - you likely eat far 2 much
2) No chips, soda, donuts, sugary cereal, ice cream, mashed potatoes or white pasta.
3) Exercise - you must do 30 minutes of cardio (jogging, treadmill) 3 to 5 times per week if you reallly want to see results.
4)eat small, frequent meals - Nuts, chicken breasts, turkey, fish, eggs and egg whites, vegetables, salads.
5) Drink water, all day every day.
6)Lay off the frozen foods (pizzas, hotpockets, etc)
After you lose some weight you can eat some of this stuff again, but it needs to be a once-in-a while treat instead of a daily routine. Good luck
