Is it safe to use WD 40 on wheel nuts?

My mate just finished putting some bikes together for me and he sprayed the wheel nuts with WD 40. Thing is i did this to a scooter that had a squeaky wheel and within minutes the wheel fell of. WD 40 is used to slacken nuts off so im now wondering if the nuts will stay tight.

WD40 can be used to free rusted or stuck nuts or bolts but should never be used for lubricating bearings.

If your wheel fell off it is because the wheel wasn't tightened securely or something broke. No anti seize compound or lubricant will untwist nuts or bolts... that is the job of the person working on the item.

yes just make their on tight

Sure -- but if the nuts are frozen an even better penetration oil is SiliKroil -- available on th net at

You sprayed the squeaky wheel, but you didn't say you tightened it, so it must not have been tight.

If your mate really wanted to be particular, he would lube the fasteners (nuts&bolts), then tighten with a torque wrench to the recommended value.

By the way, if you over-tighten you actually decrease clamping force. You may also strip the threads or break the bolt.

If the nuts are tight they won't come loose.
