Mom has arthritis and can't afford health insurance, any one know of discounts? |
my mom has both fibromyalgia and RA. She has had this for as long as I can remember, and I'm now 24 years old.My father has been the sole provider ever since she stopped working shortly after they were married. He is retired now and doesn't get much money, so that barely pays the bills, because to get health insurance for my mom would cost too much, and it doesn't pay for a whole lot. They pay for all her medications and doctor bills out of pocket. Another thing the doctor she sees won't put her on a permanent disability, for whatever reason I'm not sure of. But she can't even walk, she has to use a power scooter everywhere she goes or my father pushes her in a wheel chair.Does anyone have any information on anything that would help my parents pay the doctor bills? Discounts on RX or discounted health insurance? They have tried to get medicare but they won't cover her. Yes!!!! you can try geting medicare It helps you pay for your medicine if you can't afford it. If she can't qualify for medicare, or medicaid (and by the way, tell her to see a different Dr. to try to get disability), then look at the web sites for the companies that make her medications and see if they offer help for low income people. Lots of them offer big discounts or free pills. I also have RA since I was a child so I understand what your mother is going through. She should apply for Social Security disability at your local office and you need a caring doctor to help with this process. If she gets disability, she will have to wait for 24 months before she can receive Medicare, unless she has chronic renal failure, that's the only exception. Go to www.arthritis.org, the Arthritis Foundation's website and scroll to the bottom and click on 'contact us' and call their toll free number and ask them for assistance. They will give you info and tell you what you can do. Also contact the drug companies and ask for assistance. Help your mom find a new , caring rheumatologist who can help her apply for disability or go with your mom to her next appt and talk to her doctor together. Let him know how arthritis is impacting her life and that she needs help paying for medical visits, drug costs, and applying for disability. If this doesn't work, find her a different doctor. Tell your mom to hang in there! She is not alone! |
