We've been using revived batteries successfully for electric bikes and scooters. Now, we have a 4-wheel electric vehicle that appears to be the world's first 4-wheeler to run only off "dead batteries".
By G. Tang and R. Matthies. First successful road run on February, 2007, in Vancouver, BC, Canada.
If anyone else managed to do it before we did, can you provide a link or news article?

I used a set of 'dead' batteries from a golf cart dealer as the battery pack when I first bought my electric van (bought it used off eBay.) Eventually I replaced them with new batteries. Here's a picture of it:

Used or restored batteries are a lot cheaper, but of course the lifetime won't be as long. Still, it's a great idea for people on a budget, especially considering how inexpensive electricity is (about a penny per mile), and how little maintenance on an EV costs.

If only we could make this a mainstream idea, there could be a lot more electric vehicles on the road. |
