If I were to go around town in my scooter and park it, whos to say someone wont just grab it??

I think Im going to buy a larger Vespa scooter, but a nice one. To take to work and to the market and stuff.
But when I park my scooter at a store like Target or something, why wouldnt someone just pick it up and put it in their car? Is this common?

u could try to put a rotor lock on it. will make the bike completely unrideable

first you need a key, there is a security system

it can be common if you dont chain it to something. most people dont run around with bolt cutters in their pockets, which would look suspicious anyway out front trying to snatch a scooter like that

It would be about as likely as someone staeling a motorcycle.
I am sure it happens.
Isn't there a way you can lock it up?
How about a chain with a lock big enough to go around one of those big lamposts they have in the parking lots?

there are security cameras all around target and maybe it is common and maybe it isn't. but who knows for sure

You will probably have to chain it to something, although around here where I live, they may steal your scooter and whatever it is chained to as well. The other path would be to have a scooter so ugly nobody would want to touch it. So far that has worked for my 10-speed tourer bicycle.

Make sure that you wire a inverter to a battery with a coil attached to each handle and the frame. When they try to carry it, 40,000 volts rush through there system (no it won't kill anyone) and hopefully, whoever will decide Vespas aren't worth the trouble

The only people who are normally interested in nicking scooters are kids, get a lock, preferably one that will allow you to lock it onto something like railings etc. Don't park it somewhere quiet if possible, leave it in a busy place & if there's a security camera around park it under that.

Many modern scooters are fitted with immobilisers which prevent them from being started without the key so if possible look out for this as a feature when you buy. It's unlikely anyone will try to put one in their car, they're too big & surprisingly heavy.

link for sort of lock you need;

I wouldnt worry so much about someone stealing it, those things are pretty heavy and they would have to lift it up and put it in the back of a truck. I would worry about someone knocking it over or something just to be mean. But have you ever thought of safety, there are a lot of idiots driving in roads what if you get hit by a red light runner. I was hit I was driving a Volvo (very safe car) and my light had been green for quite a while, Its not like it just turned green and the end of the other traffic was rushing, no traffic had gone and gone before me. So for safety reasons I would think of that too.

most of the scooter have a Lock on it. but i never heard of someone stealing a scooter. or buy a bike chain and Lock it to the bike rack's. i hope this help.

Find 2 big burley looking guys to sit in there car while your in the store and when some punk comes along to steal your wheels they can jump out an beat the Tar out of him

I've never heard of that happening, even with a small scooter. The main hazard in parking lots is car drivers. I've had two motorcycles backed into by jerks who have driven off without so much as a note of apology..
Park in the striped zone near a light pole or, if its cool with security, park up on the walk, against the building.

The method of theft you are asking about (people picking up your scooter and putting it in a truck - a car won't work for this) is actually the major method of motorcycle theft.. Typically, three or four guys will pick up a motorcycle, put it in the back of a truck or on a trailer, and drive off with it, they do it all the time with 800 pound Harley touring bikes. This is extremely common at motorcycle rallies, and sometimes happens in parking lots. The best way to try to prevent this is to use a heavy duty hardened chain and lock around something large, heavy and well-affixed to the ground or a permanent structure, such as a light pole. Security cameras don't phase vehicle thieves, BTW, and many "professionals" carry heavy-duty bolt cutters and cans of fluid to rapidly cool and make chains brittle, thereby easier to cut.

Now, the good news for you is that there is not much demand for scooters or scooter parts, at least in the U.S. Therefore, your scooter is not a high priority target (if a target at all) for professional thieves - they're in it for the money. They want high-end sport bikes and Harleys, that's where the money is. Locking the fork lock/ignition and chaining your scooter to a fixed object will, likely, deter most amateur thieves and joyriders.

Make sure you have good insurance coverage, lock it up as well as you can, and don't worry about it. If a thief wants it bad enough, he'll get it, but it's highly improbable that they'll want a scooter badly enough to go through any real difficulty to steal one.

that's why you have insurance
