I am 15yrs. old and I need a gasoline scooter to get to and from places and I wanted to now if you are required to have a motorcycle license to drive a scooter. This type of scooter is one of the scooters that do not have a seatand it isn't the newer type of scooter that has come out it doesn't have lights, a horn, a place where you can store stuff or anything else like that it is just a normal and plain scooter. Yes, you do.
Even if you strap a weedeater engine onto your bicycle, it now becomes a "powered cycle". Electric motors are exempt, I believe.
You are ALREADY on the internet, why don't you just go straight to TXDOT first???????

http://www.dot.state.tx.us/services/vehi... Texas state law says...YES!
As long as the engine is smaller than 40cc and you don't drive it on roads with a posted speed limit over 35 mph
There are a few other requirements. Check these two links for the full details:

However, remember that local laws may further restrict how and where you can operate the scooter so give your city a call.
Have fun! If its on a Texas road, it needs to be licensed, insured, and inspected. that means proper seating, lights and horn. You also need a license to operate a motor vehicle on the road. At 15 you can be licensed to operate a bike under 250cc.
See details at the Texas Dept. of Public Safety (DPS) site. if your scooter is over 50 ccs you need a motorcycle license in Texas but first you must get a drivers license which i understand you can do in Texas but without lights your bike will not pass inspection they will not allow you to take the road test with no lights or horn both are easy to add I think you're talking about a goped. (I hate when people call these scooters)

In general, any traffic law which applies to bicycles also applies to motor assisted scooters. That means the operator must obey the usual traffic laws that bicycle operators must obey such as speed limit, signal turns, etc. (TRC 551.101(a)). However, TRC 551.351 states that some laws that apply to a motor vehicle do not apply to these scooters. This means that:
脴 the scooter operator doesn't need a driver license,
脴 the scooter operator doesn't need liability insurance,
脴 the scooter doesn't have to be registered or have a license plate,
脴 the scooter doesn't have to carry a low speed vehicle emblem; and,
脴 the scooter doesn't have to be inspected.
Cities and counties may prohibit operation of these scooters on particular streets or highways for safety reasons, as can the Texas Department of Transportation (TXDOT). |
