How much does a scooter/moped cost to buy and run?

I'm 18 and considering buying a scooter/moped (not sure what the difference is). I'm interested in how much they cost (just for a simple, second hand one), how much fuel costs and what the process is for insurance, tax et. and how much that costs as well.

Also, what's the deal with the scooter course thingy? Do you have to take it, or only if you want a really fast scooter. How much does the course cost and how long is it?

Anyway, a lot of questions. Hope someone can help... Cheers!

to ride a scooter you have to take a CBT which costs about 拢250 and takes bout half a day and is very easy. second hand scooter 800-1300 pounds would get you a decent condition one. insurance bout 500quid for someone of your age and the tax is 拢15 a year and they are dirt cheap to run on petrol. Plus they are loads of fun to ride and you'll never get caught in traffic.

scooter can cost 拢2,500, runing cost vary petrol 拢1.30 ltr

tax 拢150 year, insurance,拢200,helmet 拢50+,

simply put around 拢3,00+

the course is needed so you can pass test then think about bigger bike..

Moped = ANY two-wheeler under 50cc capacity, regardless of the style (trail, sports. scooter, custom).

Scooter = a partly enclosed two-wheeler, epitomised by the Lambrettas and Vespas of the 1960's. Scooters range from 49cc to 650cc in size. 'Scooter' is a style of bike, NOT an engine capacity.

I ran about on one of these for about two years

It cost me 拢1300 brand new. Its a vespa in everything but name and i had no problems with it, as long as you look after it. (even carries a spare tyre) Running costs where from 拢7- 拢10 a week and 拢3 for a bottle of two stroke oil. They are geared. And its a 125cc. it will run comfortablly at about 55mph
There are other scooters such as the twist and go type(gearless)
You will need to do a CBT and this cost anything from 拢70 to 拢100. It last all day and they take you through ther basics of riding and safety. You have to do it and it lasts two years. And you can ride any bike up to a 125cc.
Any scooter shop should point you where you can do it. or contact DVLA and they can tell you where your nearest one is.

I rode a scooter for years and even worked for a scooter shop years ago. If you buy a new Italian Vespa you will spend a lot more than if you by a Twist-n-go which is probably American but very good. Mine was around $1500 new and had a warrenty and free tune-ups for 2 years. In Illinois I have seen scooter shops offering them between $600-900 new!!

It got over 100 Miles/Gallon of gasoline and had a 12volt battery that I only had to charge once after it sat in storage for 4 months.

Scooters and mopeds are classified as having engines under 50 cubic centimeters. The operating laws vary from state to state. For example in Kansas you can ride them on streets having 45 MPH limits without a license or insurance, but you are required to wear protective eyegear.

In Illinois under 50cc are not street legal in some areas.

Simply put a moped has a mo*tor and ped*als hence the name moped. A moped is at least mostly metal and almost always 50cc.

A scooter usually has a larger displacement, floorboards, and are covered in plastic.

I've personally seen 50cc mopeds that go 65mph. It takes a lot of tuning and experience to get there though. Scooters go pretty fast stock but everyone will look down on you because of it.

Get a puch! they are the best moper ever.

A china scooter (moped) will cost you 2.3000.thats a 250cc and has auto tyranny,FM radio, 70mph,60 mpg, has a touring trunk on the back ,and a king and queen touring set.BUT they are not to reliable.Better buy a used YAMAHA.OR
kYMOC.

5 grand roughly
