Is insurance necessary for a scooter over 50cc?

I know that in FL, at least, one does *not* need insurance for a scooter that has 50cc, and one does not need a special license. However, once you surpass 50cc (like, for example, 150 or 200cc), then a motorcycle license is required (or so I've been told).

So, if I were to cough up $3,399 for a Piaggio Fly 150cc, would I also need insurance? I mean, if I would, I would simply settle for the $1,499 scooter in town made by some random company. I've heard good things about it, but Piaggio has name to it, y'know?

Anyway, I was just wondering about the insurance deal.

Thank you!

Dude, NONAME, you'd better be careful on that thing. A friend of mine is a Materials Scientist (Product Liability, etc.) and you wouldn't believe how many cases he's had where some kid strapped a motor onto a bike, and then zoomed off and crashed, and then ended up trying to sue the bike company or whatever. Just be careful on that thing, ok?

But no--50ccs already gives me 40-45 mph, but 150ccs would give me around 60, which is much better for me (in my town, 50 mph is basically the unwritten rule when it comes to mph). Also, I could take it places *other* than just around town...

Yes, you need at the least liability insurance for anything over 50cc's.

You have to be careful about the no-name scooters and be weary on who is saying the good things about them. I love the "I have a so-and-so scooter and I'm satisfied because haven't had "that" many problems with it." For $1500 you shouldnt have any problems!. If you paid $1500 for a television and it occasionally died, would you still be happy with it? In the past, I've owned Yamaha, Kymco and Piaggio scooters and never once had to put a warranty claim in.

Great decision on the Piaggio Fly 150. It's a fantastic scooter. Has the same internals as the Vespa LX at over $1000 less! (Don't tell the Vespa snobs, but the Fly is also faster than the LX).

shhhhhh! shut yo mouth!
no. i installed a 2 cycle ryobe off a small rototiller (30ccs)
onto my schwinn mountainbike.i must say i spent allot of time fidgetting around with the idea.allot of refining and it would hit 40mph. if i am riding on thesidewalk on a main street and im going to cross a sidestreet i better be straitarming it or crash. its fun! also 100 mpg is good.
take a gander at motorized bicycles with yer browser.unless you like things that cost too much.
i paid 20 for the bike from my uncle and 20 for the rototiller.i purchased the best tires and tubes from a schwinn dealer 80 bux and i use a sprayon upholstery contact glue to glue the tires to the wheels5 bux(else spinning tires on wheels ripps off the valve stem) yes... i am crazy ;.but the good kind.
: P

I'm in a different state but you could go to your local DMV to find out for sure.

In Missouri, I was not required to register my 49cc scoot. But, I wanted to. So as a registered vehicle, I was required to have insurance.

Any bike with a larger displacement needs to be registered with the state and most states require the bike to be insured to legally operate on the road.

Piaggio. Nice.

But, the thought of a person who is willing to spend more on a bike that goes faster and further but "would simply settle" on a 49cc bike to avoid paying for insurance...

Huh?

Get insurance no matter what you ride. MVCs happen.

Anyway...have fun riding. Be safe.

Insurance is a necessary evil. Folks are too litigious these days. A larger scooter would allow you to accelerate out of traffic situations if needed. Get the 250cc scooter and insurance and you will be happy. Good luck.

either way your better getting insurance. sorrry to judge but 150cc an only get to 60. go for the 50cc yamaha aerox that will do 55-60 mph an do a millon miles to the gallon. i had one an it was a great scooter. very very reliable. had it for 2 1/2 years an not one problem. there is a quicker 100cc version too

In maryland im pretty sure insurance is required for scooters over 50cc as well as a motorcycle license. I would highly recommend insurance on any scooter that is on the road...you never know what can happen. Insurance is usually cheap and worth it especially when it covers theft.
