I just bought a 1986 Yamaha Riva 80. I got it from a friend of mine who is moving and didn't want it anymore. His Dad bought it in 1987 from a man in a neighboring state who had lost the title for it. They only planned on using it for fun and so they never thought to get a new title. I am trying to get a title but everywhere I call says that I can't get one and therefore I can't get plates. And so I can't get my license or insurance. I find it very hard to believe that there is absolutely no way I can get a new title. I am sure this happens quite often. Everyone who I've talked to on the phone has been very rude to me and just said that I shouldn't have bought it. I got such a good deal on it and it's in perfect condition. It would be a shame if there's no way I can get a title. Does anyone know what I can do? I live in Illinois by the way. You need to go in person to DMV.
Take with you whatever documentation you can find ... get the VIN (Vehicle Identification Number) off the scooter ... if you can't find it, call the manufacturer 7 ask where to look.
You need proof of chain of custody, bills of sale from whoever to whoever.
You are first filing for lost title.
If you cannot get title, then legally you are driving a stolen vehicle. You need to get that settled first.
Sometimes a good deal is precisely because it is a steal.
then when you do have a title, you can get it registered and insured. |
