Would I get a single 24 Volt 48Ah battery, if I serially combined twenty, 1.2Volt 2400mAh NIMH batteries?

Im only asking as I am a electronics n00b. I'm tying to replace a two lead acid 12v 12Ah batteries on my electric scooter with a smaller, more powerful battery pack. I do not even know if this is a good idea at all, i.e. if it would actually work.
