I'm new to scootering, and the first MOT is coming up. My bike is used, so I'm a little concerned. I'm sure tyres are good, suspension I'm not so sure about, but these are the big things:
I've just put a new battery in, but the headlamp is quite "flickery" when it idles. It picks up fine when I give it a bit of throttle, will this be a problem?
I installed a new exhaust mid-July and it was lovely and quiet to start with. I don't ride every day, but a couple of weeks ago, I noticed it was significantly louder than when the new exhaust was put on. How loud is too loud for the MOT?
Thanks,
Amy Headlight is fine, it runs off the alternator which is 'turned; by the engine, increase you idle will keep the light steady and bright, but that isn't necessary for passing the inspection stuff.
Your muffler would probably pass, as a whole lot of two wheelers are far louder! However, it does sound as if it needs attention, careful examination should tell you what needs to be tightened or replaced to its proper place, mufflers are a common sore spot on scooters, lots of vibration and many are just not up to the task. Oh yeah, the bike failed. Excessive noise and a problem with the steering lock. Bleagh. Report It
Headlamp should be fine so long as it settles down once the revs are a little above tickover.
Exhaust shouldn't have got louder. Either there's a hole in it, or more likely, the nuts at the manifold need nipping up. Steve C has it right.
Just for info. the amount of noise an exhaust is allowed to make is at the discretion of the guy performing the MOT. Your headlamp is no problem at all. Basically all your battery is for is starting the scooter and possibly the indicators as well.
If you remove the battery you will still be able to start your scooter by by kicking the kick starter, you will find your bike will run no problem including all your lights.
Your headlamp and lights in general run on a system called 'direct lighting'. The more you rev the bike the more electric power your bike produces hence the lights get brighter. Only smaller scooters have this sort of set up.
So no need to worry. Check fixings on exhaust.light is normal on some scoots.it will pass no problem. |
