Will the Shimano XTR rear derailer work with an 8 speed cog?

I have a Schwinn hardtail bike, and I'm looking to upgrade after I ripped off my last derailer.

I might consider an XTR front derailer as well.

Hey,

Yeah man... You just need to set the limit screws. It is the shifters that determine the gear spacing. The derailler just does the work.

Also, keep in mind, derailler is only part of your shifting. If you pick up deore or better shifters, you'll notice a nice improvement.

Here's what to do.

1. screw in both limit screws (L,H), and both barrel adjusters (shifter and derailler). Remove the lower pulley from the derailler with an allan key, install derailler to frame, and install the lower pulley again with the chain on it. This way you don't need to break the chain.
2. start pedalling, and slowly unscrew the H limit until the chain runs smooth on the smallest cog. Then pull the cable hand tight, and fasten it.
3. start shifting up. if it doesn't go, unscrew a barrel adjuster until it does. When you get to the lower gears, keep shifting up, and slowly unscrew the L limit, until you are able to shift smoothly into the lowest gear.
4. shift back down, if it won't go smooth, you either unscrewed a barrel adjuster too much, need to replace cable and housing, or your derailler hanger is bent - which may be a possibility if you wrecked your previous derailler.

There you go...

enjoy the new derailler

enjoy Source(s): work in a bike shop
Every rear derailleur that Shimano has made since the mid '90s has the same ratio of lateral movement to cable pull, so they'll work with any Shimano shifter. Since you ripped the last derailleur off in a crash, take the bike to a shop and have the derailleur hanger alignment checked and adjusted or replaced before you try to put the new one on. It's almost impossible to dial in a derailleur if the hanger is bent.

Front derailleurs give you about the worst performance to dollar ratio of any upgrade you can put on a bike. If it's not broken, leave it alone.
