Brother thinking of selling bikes? |
My younger brother who is 15 is thinking of fixing up old bikes. I was wondering how much should he try to sell the bikes for? He has an old schwinn from I don't know when...and a dirt bike thing. It could be a fun learning experience... but... he won't make money. Old fixed up bikes just don't fetch much money. You can pick up bikes in good shape on Craig's list, Salvation army, yard sales etc. for 15 to 50 bucks or so. There are so many bikes around people don't use. If he can pick up bikes for free or nearly free and perform a couple hours of work on 'em he'd get something out of it. If he has to buy lube, cables, chains, tires, tubes... (all commonly needed items) he will lose money in many cases. He certainly would learn about business, that's worth the effort in itself. That depends on what the old bikes are. There are hundreds of bikes on the market. Good rule of thumb is, IF the bike is in like new condition (but used and rebuilt) 1/2 the original selling price. The price goes down from there. It ultimately is what the market will bear. The lack of detail makes me think the bikes aren't in real great shape and he probably isn't going to get much out of them. Hey, a real nice thing to do would be to donate them to charity. Look on Craigs list. That's were hes gonna end up selling it anyway. free to post the ad. |
