I'm need help restoring an antique schwinn bike? |
I'm fixing my grandfathers antique schwinn bike. And I have no clue how to start. I need to know how to paint it, if I need to sand the old paint off, where I can get tires, and anything else I need to get or do. Thx If you are restoring it to original you should first seek the help of an expert restorer. EVERYTHING counts in the restoration, right down to correct color scheme and decals... something you may not be able to do on your own. If all you want to do is give it a fresh paint job I suggest that you strip all the parts off the bike including all bearing cups and any type of chrome or plated parts and take it to an auto body shop. They'll sandblast and spray it for you for about $100. While they are working on it you can proceed with the overhaul and cleanup of the remaining parts. Steel you can have sand blasted at your local body shop. Alum. is a lot of elbow grease job. I'd take it to a body shop and have them look at it. Google, then call Martin's bike shop Ephrata, PA...It's where Floyd Landis picked up his first bike....they have a barn with $1 million worth of restored antique bikes and stuff in a barn in the the back. Be careful when having something sand blasted, it will tear things up (like chainguards). You may want it bead blasted or have them use walnut shells. If you don't mind using some gloves (seriously) and a little elbow grease, use aircraft stripper. It will usually strip to bare metal and not damage any parts. Your local bikeshop can help on the parts, just don't expect original stuff as some of it is hard to find and has a hefty price tag to match.
