I need an inexpensive bike for my wife. Is the Schwinn Midtown any good?

Costco has it for $200. She doesn't bike often, so I don't need anything fancy...but I don't want her riding a deathtrap either.

I think you'd be better served to seek out the opinions of a quality bike shop, and buy a bike from them for $279.00. Maybe she would ride more often, and longer distances, with a quality bike that fits her, handles well, doesn't break and instills confidence. Any quality shop with a good inventory will be able to show you several bikes in the $250.00 to $350.00 range that will come with several things the department store bike won't come with: professional advice during your initial visit, professional setup (which can be the difference between a "death trap" and a safe ride), one or more free return visits for adjustments and tune-ups, and most importantly a real person who cares about cycling and their customers. You really have nothing to lose, and everything to gain by visiting a shop. Ask the "bike guy" in your neighborhood for a referral. Bikes have come a long, long way in recent years. They are amazing machines now, even at the lower price levels. Good luck and have fun!
Drop an extra $150 and buy an Electra Townie. If she finds the bike visually appealing and very comfortable will she will ride more? Schwinn is not what is used to be, and it never really was a good bike. Don't buy a bike with a steel frame, buy an aluminum frame bike.
Don't listen to the other guy. She doesn't need a $450 aluminum bike if she doesn't ride a lot. Schwinn bikes are just fine and have made bikes for casual riders for a long time. I think that bike will be good, as long as the bike is comfortable, that bike should be perfect. Schwinn is a good brand for what you will be using it for.
I can't find that particular bike on the Shwinn website, only on Costco's website. I can explain that for you. Department store bikes are different quality than Bike Shop bikes. Department store bikes are junk and have always been junk. You are much better off taking your wife to a Bike Shop and find out what bike she would like, and they could also fit the bike right. Having a good quality bike (that fits right) will make a big difference in her ability to ride it, and will last a long long time. So my suggestion is, don't waste your money on that Costco Shwinn, she won't like riding it. Have her try out several bikes at a Bike Shop. Don't be afraid to have her try out more expensive bikes also (the difference is not just price!). You might have to spend (quite a bit) more to find her a bike that she will enjoy riding. Once you can tell the difference between bike shop bikes and department store bikes, you will never even consider a department store bike again.
