Help!!!! Several Bike Problems!!!? |
Ok to start off i have a schwinn mesa. I loved it for the first year... I have had it for about three years now and i am having major problems and they do't go away. They will for a couple of months but then they come back, if even a month. Anyway right now i have to tighten the screw that holds on the entire pedal shaft thing EVERY day, TWICE a day if i ride for a while. Any suggestions? Number 2, my spokes on my back rim keep comming loose and need tighting every week or so. That means i have to take the rim off the bike, take the tire off the rim and tighten each and every last spoke. Next and last (thank god) is that my gears don't shift correctly. I have tightened the back cable and that one works fine now, but my front gear when i go to switch from 1 to 2 it will stay on 1 for a while and rub against the metal thing until it changes a little while later. I don't think it's normal to have these kinds of problems because me dad had a schwinn for 10 years and never had this problem. I had a similar problem with my Trek mountain bike a few years ago.. The crank (the piece that holds the pedal) keeps creaking, then coming loose after a few hours of riding. Turned out the threads on the nut and bottom bracket were stripped, probably damaged during initial assembly. The bike shop where I bought it from changed out the bottom bracket and the cranks, and everything has been rock solid since then. I think that's probably what needs to be done on your bike. As far as the spokes on your rims coming loose, remember that the tension on the spokes is part of what keeps a wheel "true." Your wheel is probably out of true and the hardware that holds the spoke to the rim is probably stripped and can't hold the tension. Best thing to do would be to replace the wheel. If I was in your shoes, I'd get the BB, cranks, and rear wheel replaced with higher-quality components. Expect to spend at least $150 for parts + labor at a bike shop. It's a good investment because you can probably squeeze a few more years of good use out of that bike, without having to spend more for a new bike. The derailleurs and shifters sounds like it just needs adjustment again (which usually needs to be tuned up each year anyway if you do a lot of riding). Hope this helps, and good luck. |
