Schwinn for a roadbike? |
So I'm looking at roadbikes. I've been looking at Trek but Schwinn seems have good prices. Is that because they're lesser bikes? Is there something bad I should know? I was looking at the Fastback and Letour GS from Schwinn. And from Trek I was looking at the Pilot 1.0, 1.2 and Alpha Aluminum 1000. I'm just looking to narrow my field down a bit before I go to the shop. I'm looking to do some longer distance solo rides. Nothing fancy. Schwinn, like other companies have not too good and very good bikes. I looked at the bikes you selected. They are all pretty much spec'd the same. They're are all fine. look here for reviews on road bikes: http://www.roadbikereview.com/ Your looking at bike just shy of full 105 level components. Many cyclist, me included, feel 105 level is the best quality for the price components. The reviews look good for all your selection. If your looking at $1000 for the Pilot 1.2 check this Motobecane Le Champion SL. It's far better in my opinion then anything your looking at for just a few more bucks. http://bikesdirect.com/ Read up and take the plunge! Get a Cannondale, these are the Rolls Royce's of bikes. wow that's expensive.. you must have a lot of money.. get the treks schwinn is bad and no longer lives up to its name how about this piece of thing: http://www.specialized.com/bc/sbcbkmodel... Whatever you do DON'T get a Cannondale. There is a reason they have the nickname "Crack'n'Fail". Um, You'll find that Schwinn, Mongoose (the models available at local bike shops, not WalMart), Diamondback, Raleigh, Fuji, K2, Ironhorse and some other brands seem to be less expensive if you compare exact component specs with Trek. You are right. Generally, buying a Trek for the same money as other brands will penalize you with one step lower components. So, ignore the name and go for the best value. 27 years in the industry. If you can get a good price on the Trek 1000 I would suggest this first. Followed by the Fuji, which have nice entry road bikes for the price. schwinn makes some good bikes. here is my thoughts, all these bikes now days are mass produced. a computer welds them, and they produce a very consistant product. the days where it was a craft where men brazed frames is past. in those days it counted whose bike it was. they all use the same components for the most part, so shop price. if you are looking for a 105 equipped bike for example, shop features for the money instead of name brand. because armstrong used treks thier fame has made them popular and that has driven thier prices up. Giant, Schwinn and others arent as popular and give you more bang for the buck in my opinion. also there is a saying that steele is real. if you can find a steele frame, i highly recommend trying it out. there is a reason many riders love steele frames. |
