How do i fix the steering in my bike?

its an old schwinn and today coming home from class it just went out, i took the handle bars off and found it very dirty if that makes a difference. Other than that i am not to sure if maybe the bolt is bad or whats wrong there seems to be nothing actually on the bike that i can bolt to did a piece come off possibly?

Holy crap I'm howlin here I'll tell ya why in a sec first cyclone i think has your answer i think your probly missin the wedge too there a dime a dozen and cheap show a mech you'll have it in seconds.....Now for the humour A PAIR OF VICE GRIPS YOU SAY july11???? let me be the first to educate you on the complexity of "bicycles" are you at all aware, lets use mountain bikes as an example (mosty what i work on) ...that mountain bike technology directly mirrors (with the exception of a motor) and is in some cases more technical than pro motocross and that the tools required to do a PROPER job are not only very expensive but highly specialized .....VICE GRIPS !!!! YOU KILL ME!!! even an old beater Schwinn deserves better than vice grips stay the hell away from my bike. Source(s): still laughin my *** off
take it to the bikes mechanic
well, dirty is not your problem...a piece needs to be tightened or replaced..too bad I can't walk over to your house...could probably fix in around 30 sec....you seem to be smart enough, seeing as you go to school, to fix it yourself...a vise grips is the only tool you need for a bicycle, thank jesus.
Hi Lucas,

Your steering shaft, the thing that is dirty should have a bolt at the top, this bolt pulls a tapered plug at the bottom (dirty end) if this bolt is lost go to a bike repair shop and ask for the correct spare. They might put it in for for free if not take it to someone with a wrench to put it in and tighten it up.

Good luck and happy biking!
Look down at the top of the handlebar stem. You should see a hex bolt right on top, facing the sky. Check to see that bolt is tight. Most likely, all you need is a hex wrench (not vice grips), tighten it up, and you are good to go.

Make sure the handlebar and front wheel are in alignment before snugging it up.
Without more information nobody can diagnose your problem.

Take it to a bike shop, and NEVER listen to anyone that thinks vice-grips are a bicycle tool.

Anyone that uses vice-grips on a bicycle is, in fact, a complete TOOL themselves!
