How does the quality of Mongoose bicycles compare to Schwinn bicycles?

Not taking my car to college; in need of a durable bike that won't break the bank.

If you want a bike for just getting around campus, I would just get the cheapest beater bike. Often, you don't have the time to disconnect the brakes and quick-release the wheels to lock them up with the frame, and some thief can just swipe the wheels and your seatpost outside the lecture hall while you are in class, if those are not disassembled and locked up.

So if you get the cheapest bike, bike thieves will not bother to hit it. And if you do get hit, at least it's no big loss. Source(s): On the second day of class during my freshman year, my roommate's $1000 bike got swiped while he was in lecture.
mongooses are MUCH better.
It depends on what kind of bike you are looking at. Road bikes, I would trust the Schwinn(unless bought at walmart) over the Mongoose. For BMX and MTB, I would take the Mongoose over the Schwinn.

Do not buy from a mart!
I agree with THD.

Both Mongoose and Schwinn will represent a similar value at the same price point. This means, a $300 Mongoose will perform about the same as a $300 Schwinn.
