Schwinn Hybrid Bike Gears help?

My Schwinn Hybrid Bike has two sets of gears. One on the left and on the right.

The right has 7 gears and left has 3. Whats the difference between the two?

The one on the left shifts the the chain rings next to your pedals. These gear changes are bigger steps than the 7 on your right. If you think of the right as "fine tuning" you will get the idea. Since you are asking this question I am guessing you are new to this gear system so there are some thing you should know. It only shifts when you are pedaling. You should ease your pressure on the pedals when shifting. Start out with the chain in the middle on both the front (referred to as chain rings) and the rear (referred to as cogs). most of your riding will be done in the middle chain ring and fine tuning your gear selection with the rear cogs.
